I read lots of books. If I read a book by an author and like it lots, I tend to go on a hunt for a few other books by that author and read a bunch at once. I do a mini-marathon of author's works. I get into a mood where I really am enjoying something about that author's style.
I just read my second Patricia Wilson book of the day, and I felt like ranting a little since I'm in a hyper feel-good kind of mood.
I figure its a good idea to have a thread about authors we enjoy, where you can rave about any authors you're really enjoying at the moment. Feel free to drop in and recommend an author. My recommendations will mostly be Harlequin Presents and Paranormal authors.
So.... Patricia Wilson.... she's an HP/HR author from the 80s and 90s. I've just read "Bond of Destiny" and "Relentless Flame" by her. (I also heavily skimmed "Intangible Dream" and "The Final Price" and would have read them, except I know I've read it in 2006-2008, so I wasn't sure I should re-read it yet and review it for the challenge. I drooled a little over the emotional intensity of those books and skimmed so heavily I was almost reading the entire book again though, I got wrapped up in the conflict). This woman has a really INTENSE style. It's a passion that sweeps you up. The hero's passion is very alpha, a little angry and very much physical and tied to the senses in a good way.
I read "Bond of Destiny" first, and though I haven't posted my review yet, in it I cautioned that some readers may find the premise a little icky (the hero lusted after her when she was a bit young) and some might find the hero too much of a bully. It was hugely passionate though and it made me want to read more from her.
So that brought me to "Relentless Flame". And I'm marking that book as a KEEPER! "Relentless Flame" really hit its mark with me, it was intensely passionate but it also had a hero who was just so emotionally and physically enslaved by the heroine. He felt so protective and tender towards her! He just kept reaching out to her, touching her tenderly, being angrily protective of her when she got into dangerous situations, and all the while dragging her closer and closer to him. Very good story.
That's my rave about Patricia Wilson for the moment...

You know... I think this
You know... I think this thread will make a good companion to my "Janet's Keepers" thread. I'll use it when I'm feeling ranty and hyper about the books/authors I'm reading. I love talking about what I love and this is an extension of my keeper list essentially, going off on what I enjoy about an author's style and why I feel like reading more from that author at the moment.
Be forewarned though, Janet's mind goes off on tangents and Janet needs to be shot down with tranq darts at times. I will go off on long hyper rants. My interests will shift from one author to the next, to the next, then fondly back again.
I've got fond memories of lots of HP authors that I would happily rant about if given any encouragement. Some authors I've recently raved about and disected my feelings about their styles... Susan Napier, Michelle Reid, Carole Mortimer, Robyn Donald (though it wasn't entirely positive, RD had some early HPs that touched on adultery/infidelity).
Always great!!
I don't know if I would call it a rant but one author I know, without a doubt, her books will be something very enjoyable for me is Jayne Anne Krentz. That is including all her different pen names here: historical, futuristic, contemporary. Of course, there are more names I gravitate to but over the long haul you can't beat JAK.

Blake... by "rant" I just
Blake... by "rant" I just meant a long rambling hyper post. Sometimes I let my crazy off it's leash a little too much.
That's when those tranq darts need to come out.
Orchid.... lol... I intend to use this thread in a POSITIVE way. It's not meant for my angry ranting, though maybe I will end up having a little of that going on. I don't like to say "avoid this author because they have regularly disappointed me or rubbed salt in my ick factors". So we might still need a place to discuss the fidelity topic if we want. I don't know whether I want to bite into the fidelity debate at the moment, it's a big thing to get into, and when I do talk about it, I want to make sure I'm in an open state of mind because otherwise I'll start sounding extreme, as if the H/h should both be virgins so their sexual histories can't cause the other person pain or embarrassment. (Man, does it suck when a heroine runs into his gloating and interfering ex-lovers? People can't be mature and move on nicely can they?)
I definately see this thread as a companion to the keeper thread, it's definately another way of giving recommendations. But instead of one particular book, it's going to disect the style of an author. I'll be reading a few books by the author that week and collectively say "this is the best thing about this author, this is why I kept reading books by her". It is more personal, more subjective, and about my personal reaction to the style. People's tastes may be different from mine. It's a more open-ended kind of recommendation, not about a particular book necessarily, but what appeals to me.
.... so I read another Patricia Wilson book before I went to bed. "Perilous Refuge". It was good in many ways, and it handled an "other woman" plotline really well. The other woman was rubbing in that she was the hero's lover, and the hero was LETTING her hang around his house with his parents, and it was bothering me: why would the hero let his ex-lover hang around his wife? But once it got cleared up it made sense: the woman was just a friend of the family and he hadn't ever been with her, she was just a pest. That made me appreciate that hey, the hero isn't hurtful, stupid, or naive about putting two of his lovers in the same room. The book failed the test of time though when it comes to custody issues and careers for women, so I wouldn't really highly recommend it.
kinda disappointed

*waves hello* Mmm, yes,
*waves hello* Mmm, yes, wish there were more KH books to be had. I still have only read that one "Wife for a Week" book, which I thought a keeper. Haven't read "Bedded for Diamonds" yet, I've kept myself busy with other books, soon I'll order the ebook and let you know what I think of it.
On the topic of Kelly Hunter though... I think Susan Napier is a bit similar to KH. There's humour in both styles and both keep you on your toes with surprise twists. Have you read much by SN? She's my fav HP author. I haven't read a book by her yet that I've found icky, and I've read 28 of her 35 (and a half) books. 7 and a half more to go. I hope I can get my hands on them all eventually. Older ones are harder to find copies of.
Susan Napier
I think I've only read one by her (but then my memory isn't the best in the world) but I do have another of hers in my edver muliplying TBR. Now I really want to read the one with the virgin H after hearing all this talk about it. Defininetely have to keep the eyes open for that one and others by her. (
I think I just heard the bookshelf groan)

Christa! "Secret Admirer"
Christa! "Secret Admirer" is the one with the virgin hero. *chuckles* I had so many fav scenes in that book. I was just choking and gasping at some of the provocative things the hero said to needle his heroine!
And really... I was telling someone else... that Susan Napier has this fetish for shocking opening chapters... it's really a drawing point for me.
Secret Admirer... the H/h and another woman are trapped in an elevator together, and the heroine is burning up with heat and shame, wearing a fur coat. The hero yanks her coat open and BAM! she's only wearing rosebud panties and he gets a shocking eyeful.
Tempt me Not... the heroine's trying to convince the hero she isn't sleeping with David, the boyfriend of the hero's sister. She gets caught with David fixing her dress/legs. And then she drops a bomb on the hero, she's not David's lover, she's his "mother" (well, stepmum).
In Bed with the Boss... the boss has been in love with the widowed heroine for years, now she's taken off her rings and getting over her grief. He's so pleased. Then she drops the bomb that she's resigning and getting engaged to his business rival. The hero goes apopoleptic.
I could name more, there's other shockingly delightful openings. Such fun premises. If you have buy any of her older books let me know and I'll pull up my review, I love to chat about 'em. Good luck finding the Secret Admirer book. :)
I read both
of the Kelly Hunter books and both were great so yeah wish I could get more of hers, hopefully soon another one. I just read a Kate Walker book that was really good Spanish Billionaire, Innocent Wife that was very moving. Two opposite sides of the spectrum there. While Kate's was pretty sad and moving Kelley's were both full of humor. Liz Fielding also writes with a lot of humor and so does Trish Wylie mainly HR but I love their writing styles.
The D2K Paranormal Junkies ~ 2008 Book Challenge Blog
Oooh. Spanish
Oooh. Spanish Billionaire, Innocent Wife was definately a keeper for me. The first keeper I've noted from Kate Walker. In general, I really like the way KW weaves the emotions in her characters, good storytelling. In specific, SBIW was an intense read that I got caught up in from the first chapter til the end. The feelings of grief and passion just swirled and simmered and grew. Mmm.
Trish Wylie... I loved the humour in "Her Bedroom Surrender". I thought the couple in "At the Billionaire's Bidding" were truly in love and I could see them going the distance. I also just recently read (haven't blogged yet) "The Bridal Bet" (an HR by her) and I really liked it. Friends become lovers story, really well-written, deep history between them.
Liz Fielding.... I've read books by her, but I haven't read enough of them recently to form an opinion.
Kelly Hunter
Dropping here cos y'all seem to be talking about one of my fav authors (who lucky for me also happens to be a friend) I'm going to go even further and boast that I have not only read all her books - number 4 being THE BEST YET - but am lucky enough to have autographed copies.

Hi Ladies (and Amy who shunted me over here with her foot firmly wedged on my backside)
I'm thinking that if I can have the postal addy of a quiet canadian or two I'll pop both Sleeping Partner (the Rita nominated book) and Taken By the Bad Boy (Pete Bennet book) in the post and you can shuffle them round a bit between anyone wanting to read them? There's a ffth story due out in the UK in December called Playboy Boss, Live-In Lover but lo, I don't have copiesof that one yet. Still not sure of NA release dates for any of them.
Let me know and addy or two via my website email and I'llpop them in the post. And thanks so much for all the positive comments on the KH stories you've read so far.

Ok, Amy's totally forgiven for bragging and rubbing it in all of our faces that she's got all the KH books. She brought Kelly over here!
Very generous of you Kelly! I ran and emailed you of course
Hope the competition's not too fierce.
If more people saw this thread, there would be a heck of a race to email you I'm sure. Lots of people have reviewed "Wife for a Week" and "Bedded for Diamonds" here at eharlequin, and people have just waxed poetical about the books. This is the link for reviews of books by Kelly Hunter...

Actually, you know, I've thought about it for a minute after stopping the shrieking... and I realize there is a logistics problem here. If we get the book and play "pass it on" we're going to run into a problem. Am I the only one here who is a selfish woman who will probably find the books keepers and cry a little at the idea of parting with them?
I've never done a book swap before, I'm quite a hoarder when it comes to books. (my poor closet, and my two book shelves, and my books even invade my desk, and rest in boxes under my bed. Slightly obsessed no?)
I think we need a clear release date for NA, then I'd feel happier about passing on the book! *grin* Knowing that the day is coming when the books will be available to purchase in NA. Is there anyone you can ask/harrass about that Kelly? Maybe get it released as an ebook?
Email problems
Two email addresses are listed on your site Kelly, and I tried to email both but they came back as "delivery failed"

Is there any way around the problem? Is there another functioning email address? Or maybe the problem lies with me?
hoarder
I'm a book hoarded too (as people who see I have three bookshelves full can attest to) but sometimes I am happy to just read a book but after I will still keep an eye out. I really wanted to read Wife for a Week, so the person who lent me Wife I have now lent Bedded for Diamonds to. I should have it back soon. If you don't get the ebook soon I can lend.
I think I still have a copy of the contract this person had to sign in blood promising her first born if she didn't return it.

Page 40 and it's a good thing I'm not reading this at night or I would be waking up my poor husband. LOL more that once. I want to read this slowly and savor it but need the end quickly.
Thanks to all of you who recommended this book. I can tell already that it's a KEEPER. One that I'll put aside to read when I need a lift.

Amy... you moonlight as a fairy eh? *gives a squeeze*
Kaelee.... ok, I've wanted to buy BFD since I saw and ordered it the first week of July. Frakking book was "sold out" though and there wasn't a copy for me. I'm going to cave and get the eharlequin ebook, I just can't read comments like Kaelee's and delay. I've had problems with ebooks from eharlequin not wanting to open up on my computer though. So is it really easy to email the orders people and get them to let me download another format of the ebook? Because I'm not confident the first format I try will work. Just tell me it's easy and I'll order it right now. lol.
And I was looking at KH's site, and both the two books sound yummy. The bad boy Pete does sound quite promising Amy....
About the email address.... I don't know why I got a "failed delivery" email when I tried to email that address. I tried to send the email twice, once copying and pasting the addy, once typing out the addy myself. I use gmail and it instantly bounced back as undeliverable. The third address Kelly gave worked and the email went through. I don't know why it would work for some and not others. Weird.

I don't know how I lucked out at the used bookstore but it was the best $2.25 I have ever spent. I may even try e books for the first book. Now we just have to get the rest of them in North America. Should we start a petition?

Well, there IS a thread for "suggesting ebooks" here at eharlequin, and I mentioned Kelly Hunter back in July. I think Lorie just watches that thread and takes the requests to pass on. but I will go there and suggest it. Do you remember if Wife for a Week was about the Bennett family ? I tried the search site but all it gave me was Wife related and then frooze on me.

You always start up such good topics! I've enjoyed the KH books too. I'm behind on my blogging (way behind, actually!!) and I don't know if I will ever be able to catch up!
I'm a great one to glom an author too. I think I'm only missing about 5 of Mary Balogh's books (her old regencies). I've got all Linda Howard's books and most of Emma Darcy, Lynne Graham, Sandra Marton, Anne Mather and Miranda Lee, just to name a few. My keeper shelves are getting full!

Kaelee.. Wife for a Week is about Hallie Bennett, sister.
Just for fun, let's look at a fav scene from WFaW.....
Fav Scene:
‘Oh.’ She stared at him and all of a sudden the hand on his crotch stilled.
‘You’re leaning on your elbows,’ she said.
‘So?’
‘So if your arms are there, my hand is—’
He watched her eyes grow round and her cheeks grow rosy with no little satisfaction.
‘That’s not your arm I’m patting, is it?’
*snort of a laugh*
Other authors... I've got a few books coming my way, just four this time, 2 Sandra Martons, 1 Anne Mather, 1 Miranda Lee. I'm looking forward to the SMs, they are 4 star rated on RT.
I'm kind of having a "committment problem" the last few days. And by that I mean, I am heavily heavily skimming books, but not wanting to commit to reading them start to finish. I don't know why I'm doing that. Maybe it's because I've been too hyper? An excuse for not reading some of them is that in skimming I saw some of my ick factors, but a bunch of them don't touch my ick factors so there is no reason for me to pass them over at the moment. I'm weird.
Trilogy
Kaylee the trilogy is going into the U.S via the e-harl website so you should be able to order it from there - bit easier on the pocket I would imagine.
But....pauses for dramatic effect...a book I wrote a couple of years ago The Italian Count's Baby is being released retail (yes, you can buy if off a shelf!!!) in the US as a promotional Presents, yes it's a Presents!!!!, in October. I haven't seen the new cover yet and the wait is killing me!! And then if you like that one, well it's actually a follow up to one I did before that called The Surgeon's Meant-To-Be Bride which I'm sure could find a way to you if you felt so moved after reading Ben and Katya's story in October.
But back to Kelly for a moment - I love her humour but I've also cried in her last two books as well. That girl is soooo clever!

Oh, a Presents this time?
Oh, a Presents this time? I read lots/most of the books in that line, so I'll probably read this one. (I'm a little hard to push towards the "medicals" normally but we'll see since this one is an HP) Curious about what makes the difference between the HP and HMR line, does this story focus a tad less on the medical career/emergencies and a tad more on the passion and personal conflict?
And hey Amy, monopolize all you please. I made three posts in a row yesterday myself. I need to be taken down with a tranq dart sometimes when I get excited and chatty.
Yes Amy I agree.
There is both humor and pathos in the book that I have just finished.(Bedded for Diamonds) She balances them prefectly. I just love the final scene.
I haven't read any ebooks so will have to wait and see if your trilogy comes out in print. Who knows I may even try an ebook someday.
On a different note , we went out to a pub this afternoon for a late lunch and supper combined.(It's still Saturday here). For the first time ever I saw Rugby highlights from various teams from Australia. Wow do the players ever play hard and fast. There is no protection and boy do they get a work over. We went to the pub for the Irish grub and not just the Guinness, by the way.
I looked into the Australian Harlequin site and it would be tempting to order from it . One thing I found that was unusual is that a lot of your books are sold as pairs in one book. One of Donna Alward's books was paired with a book by someone else. Your lines are labeled a bit differently also. It was very interesting to look at the author list and find out who is from Australia and who is from New Zealand at a glance. I found it very humorous that you received a free blanket if you ordered $45.00 of books.
Every book I read usually ends up with a googling trip around the book. I knew about Tamworth already as that's where our country singers go when they hit Australia.

Hey Kaelee, I'm curious how they are promoting this blanket giveaway. Are they pimping the blanket by saying "buy books and read on a lovely blanket outdoors or in bed" or is it a campaign of "steam up your love life with romance on both types of sheets"? That just makes me grin a little.
Mmmm to the rugby boys.

Not e books, Kaelee
Hi Kaelee - I'm sorry, I think I confused you. You can buy my books in print in the US just not on shelf. Go to the e-harl website (well doh, sorry if you're reading this you are already at the e-harl website - triple doh!) and click on the harlequin link which gives you a drop down box and in there is a medical link. Medcine v passion
Sorry Kaelee, forgot to mention that the trilogy will be available in print from the eharl website too - think the first one comes out in October.
Janet, every now and then they choose a few meds to be released as Presents. Mine is part of a Mediterranean Docs theme as my surgeon hero Benedetto is also an Italian Count. There is a focus on the medical stuff but in mine, as in many meds, there is passion to burn and internal conflict to keep you on the edge of your seat (or at least turning the pages
).
Many bloggers here at the book challenge have converted to medicals because they say that the intensity of the medical situations adds an intensely emotional element to the plot as well.
I really don't think you're going to be disappointed. But anyway - you can be the judge of that
Oh and yes - go the black jeans look!
My heroines are usually nurses as I am a nurse and feel really comfortable to write from that perspective but they certainly don't let any doctor walk over them!! And many of our books don't have the heroines as nurses - that's one of the best things about the line, its variety.
Okay, shameless plug over
