I'm supposed to be frantically washing and drying clothes and packing bags,
but y'all know me better than that, don't you?
I started putting away boxes of read books and pulling out or putting upstairs some of the TBR boxes, with the thought in the back of my mind that I need to start choosing books to take on holiday
and thinking of which books to take, and despite my belief that peoples' opinions don't affect my choice, I've come to the conclusion that I'm as susceptible as the rest of you, because it's a fair bet I won't be bringing erotica (but only because there isn't any unread in my hardcopy TBR), but part of that is so as not to leave it lying around when we'll be sharing bedrooms with the kids (four and five year olds are not especially famous for discretion
)
It doesn't bother me to bring Blazes (their covers are mild when you compare them to erotica covers), but I'll probably bring some of the Supers and Miras I didn't get to lately, maybe the Athena Force now that I've nearly got the whole series, some suspense and a couple of the Everlasting Loves that are beginning to tickle my attention sensors
I came across my box of Janet Evanovich, but it's still in the attic, but one of these days I might just go on a binge and read from where I left off in book 2
What I meant about the insidious influence is that while I feel I should bring some of my Miras and suspense because they're acceptable and more likely to be "lendable" to other family members who may not share my taste in erotica or hot romance, I'm limited by the amount of books I can bring, and I'm afraid if I bring "suitable" books I won't feel like reading them and then I'll be stuck for something to read and that will affect my mood if they're the only books available.
And yet when I'm at home I do read those books and enjoy them (there's a reason I bought them, when all is said and done), but when they're the only books available I don't feel like reading them, BECAUSE they're "suitable"
I'd share my list and let y'all choose for me except that the TBR list is 18 pages long (and will be significantly longer after I get back if a certain M bag gets sent on time
)
Do any of the rest of you notice this insidious little influence or am I (as usual) noticing problems that only apply to me?

I know where you are coming from
as I took a bag of books with me for an overnight stay. I was halfway through a book but I couldn't decide what I wanted to read next so into my library bag went about ten other books. My husband didn't even comment as he is so used to this.

Kaelee--Are you by any
Kaelee--Are you by any chance implying that it is an unusual habit to take a bag full of books for an overnight stay?
I have a bag that my dh calls my car bag, and it goes with me out of town. It can hold 10 to 12 paperbacks, and if I am leaving the DFW area, it is full--regardless of stay length. My kids both have similar habits, and my youngest is only 3. My dh is the only person in the famliy who can travel with only one or two books, and the rest of us think that he might need psychiatric help.
Of course, all of us (except dh) take at least one book whenever we leave the house. You never know when you might get stuck in line at the bank or by a train or in traffic when there is an accident. It would horrible to be bookless. How would I cope?
Sadhbh--Take what makes you happy. If they wanted to read, they should have brought their own books. If they were unfortunate enough to be unprepared--they should be happy to have anything at all. (At least, that is what I tell my students when they complain about my classroom library on DEAR day). I'm susceptible to other people's opinions as well, but I have decided this summer that I need to start paying a lot more attention to what makes me happy. As a result, I think that I am starting to be a little--uh, witchy--when I am having to conform to what other people want. (Kids, excluded, of course, there are some mom-responsibilities that just have to happen, but I should get a life to).

Suitable?
I always try to take in to account if the books are suitable for little eyes if I know there is a possibility that they are going to be within their reach. That is just being responsible and courteous.
I'd take the Athena Force books. You know they are going to be great (not that I have read them yet, but I'm building up quite an impressive pile of them).
I hope your M bag arrives before you leave, giving you fresh pickings!
This is a common habit of mine.
I take a bag of books with me and if I should happen to forget I need to find a UBS quickly or some store that carries books. Dh would rather I bring a lot along so I don't drag him into another store and spend more money.

I'm going to Ireland, so the UBS route is a possibility where
here it's just not, and of course my sisters have books but they don't have time to read a lot so many of them will be books I already read on my last visit - I'm the only one in the family who reads this fast
So yes I'll choose a lot of books that appeal to me and hope they still appeal when they're the only books I've got with me
Thanks for the support and understanding
Hugs

Decisions, decisions...
It is hard to know what to take when you travel--books that is!!
sometimes the ones you take aren't the ones you are in the mood to read! Oh no! Now what!!
The thing about traveling is that once I get to my destination I usually don't read a lot so it takes me awhile to finish reading anything. Depending on my mode of travel, car, plane or ??, dictates how much reading is done on the way to said destination!!
Take care, happy reading,

Oh my.
I don't have issues with sharing my books with family/friends, because a good many of them don't read. Man, I hate to admit that, but it's true. I think that's why I love this site so much - because everyone here loves to read. My DH and I trade books occasionally, but not regularly. However, to be honest, even if my adult family/friends did want to peek at my books, I'd still have to take along what appeals to me. After all, what good is reading if you're only going to feel cramped and limited in the experience, right?
Oh, but then after re-reading what you wrote about the kids....well, that changes things a bit. I have to be careful about my DD looking at some of my books - especially since she's reading at such an advanced level. You just have to use discretion in these matters. It's really hard to find that limit sometimes.
I walk a tight line all the time, believe me - LOL!

Kids as readers
Yeah! I love to see a kid with a book in his or her hands.
I read Payton Place when I was15. Mind you my mom didn't know about it. I think if you are an avid reader you are going to be curious about every kind of book out there and your reading tastes will change throught the years.
