Deep Dark Reader Confessions .... Are You a Peeker?

Okay, so a friend and fellow book lover of mine recently made this startling confession to me...

She is a peeker.

That's right.

Right there in the bookstore the first thing she does after picking up the book is read the ending. This could be one page, 5 pages, or even the entire last chapter.  Every Harry Potter book, every romance, every mystery - she reads the end right there in the store. And then, she added, sometimes she skims through it, even though she has every intention of buying the book and reading it. My friend can't deal with the suspense. She needs to know where the story is going (and ending) before she can start at the beginning. She even does this with romance books, like the category romances, where it is obvious the H and h always end up together. Smile

After she made her confession she said, "It's terrible, I know it. Most people don't do that do they. Isn't it terrible?"

So I was wondering, how many avid readers out there are just like my friend?

Are you a peeker, a skimmer, or do you like the not-knowing?

Peeker.  DUH.  I'm not

Peeker.  DUH.

I'm not the kind of peeker that reads the end of the books though.  (however, I don't even read Harry Potter, but as soon as the book came out I ended up reading all the spoilers I could find online out of curiousity for how the series ends.  I watch the movies)

I don't need to know the endings of a romance novel beforehand.

BUT... what I do need to know... is how the book handles my ICK FACTORS....  infidelity, adultery, ickness about the H/h being with a brother/sister of their H/h, miscarriage, violence, rape, angst and bitterness over separations and other lovers, long separations where the heroine pines but the hero moves on (unfair), separations where the heroine goes through pregnancy and years raising the hero's baby all on her own while he blissfully ignorant moves on perhaps even knowing about the pregnancy and really cruelly rejecting her.

I am a thorough, thorough skimmer who skims a book heavily to see how the book goes before I read it.  If it hits a sore spot for me, I won't read it if I'm not in the mood.  I'll maybe read it when I'm in a different mood.  Sometimes I need a LIGHTER read, rather than a dark and angsty one.

I'm an utter peeker, I spoil myself about the whole book basically.  Though you know, I do try to skim gently at times, and just keep my eyes on the lookout for certain keywords that relate to the ick factors.  I sometimes peek so thoroughly that I basically read over half the book in pieces.  In those cases I usually wait a month before tackling the book, just so it seems "fresher" and more surprising then.  *grin*

.... Star is not surprised by this...

I Never Peek

Hey Stargirl - I never peek - it would completely ruin the surprise for me. When I was 6 yrs old, I found my parents cache of Christmas presents - it totally ruined Christmas Day for me b/c we only rec'd 1 gift each and I'd already discovered my Etch-a-Sketch.

I need to read the back blurb and front excerpt, though. It builds anticipation and I know who the protags are.

My dh won't read the back or front excerpt. He says he's smart enough to figure out who's who. Frown

The HAR author - Michele Dunaway - said she always reads the last page first - if she doesn't like the ending, she won't buy it.

Nope,

I'm not a peeker it would spoil the book. I do read the blurbs to get a feel for the book.

I'm definitely a peeker!

I'm definitely a peeker!  And proud of it.  I need to reassure myself that the characters will get over the BBM or the bad stuff that I can see coming their way.

FF, same here about the

FF, same here about the BBM.  Skimming gives me the sense of where the conflicts going and whether it'll be something that can end happily and in a well-adjusted way.

And hey, another benefit of skimming, it makes you see the author's style, the dynamic between the H/h, whether the relationship will appeal given your ick factors and mood at the moment.

90% of the time I'm a peeker

But I refrain from peeking when someone has recommended the book to me and I feel I can trust them. Does it spoil the story?  No it doesn't or I wouldn't do it. Do I enjoy the books I don't peek at better than the ones I do ? Sometimes and sometimes not. To peek or not to peek that is the question. I say go with what grabs you at the moment.

Kaelee

Absolutely. There's no right or wrong here! Laughing

I must confess

I am/was on page 175 of a book with 250 pages that I was not going to peek at the end of but just had to. I knew there was going to be a surprise ending as I was warned about it. I didn't like where the story was going right then so I peeked. I will still enjoy the 30 pages I still have left to read.

I don't ususally peek at endings in bookstores or at the library but I do read the blurbs on the back and sometimes inside.  I do my peeking sometime when I'm reading the book. Often when a conflict arises and often because I'm not going to have the time to finish the book just yet.

When I get a little money I buy books, and then if any is left I buy food and clothes..-- Erasmus

What a relief!

And it's nice to hear that others peek at the end of a book before reading it, because I can't keep from doing that!  Opposite from me, my DH refuses to peek because he says it ruins the reading experience.  He likes total surprises, and doesn't usually even read reviews until he's finished with a book.

However, I've learned that it's best for me to peek, because I've read several books that were fantastic... until the end, where they either a) dwindled down weakly, or b) ended unhappily in a way that totally disappointed me.  That's so darned exasperating that I wanna yank my hair out!  And since I'd rather keep my hair, it's best if I skip to the back, check to see how the author ends it, then go back and read the rest.  Like I've always said, I've marched to the beat of a different drum all my life. But everyone should read their books in their own way.  Hey, at least we read the books, right?

Great question, Stargirl! Smile

Not a peeker. I don't want

Not a peeker. I don't want to know the outcome. Takes all the fun out of it.

A little bit ....

I may once in a blue moon peek ahead to the ending, though with romances that's rare as I do know they have their HEA ... that's why I read romances  ;)

when I'm in a reading slump I tend to skim a number of books to see which one sparks my interest ... and I've often skimmed older books that I've picked up at sales or on ebay ... I usually end up reading those fairly soon or I bury them because I skimmed too much!  LOL ...

if I'm reading a mini-series or an autobuy author, I rarely peek ... however if a book is dragging in spots, I've been known to skip over parts so that I don't lose interest and usually after I finish the book I go back to read those parts to make sure I didn't miss anything! LOL

so I'm a skimmer more than an ending peeker  :)

A Skimmer more ...

Laughing Hi to Everybody:

Well, I am a skimmer more than a peeker.  I used to be a peeker, but as I grow older, I try to contain my curiosity & let the mystery unfold. Yet, I don't mind read a few snippets of a book, just for fun Tongue out

Since HQ are all HEA, I sometimes skim a little bit, but usually when I am frustrated or annoyed Yell at a part that's dragged, so I want to know when that part'd end so that I can skip it. If I finished a book quicker than my usual pace, usually means I don't quite enjoy it.

In romance HEA is a given,

In romance HEA is a given, I don't want to peek and find out "how".

In suspense, I certainly don't want to peek. Getting there is half the fun.

I never ever peek in mysteries

I like trying to figure them out. I don't read many Intrigue or suspense but the few that I do I don't peek at.  I peek at romance just to be sure of HEA

When I get a little money I buy books, and then if any is left I buy food and clothes..-- Erasmus

The only suspenseful

The only suspenseful stories I read are the rare-ish paranormals that I mix in with the dozens upon hundreds of HP/SDs I read.  So the ending isn't what I'm peeking at, I know the HEA will come, and there isn't usually a big bad battle being fought out in my HP/SDs.  *grin*  So I skim to get the gist and feel of the book, not for the ending.  And I skim very thoroughly because I'm picky about my ick factors.

Skimmer

I'll skim a book before I buy it. I've read books with great blurbs and excerpts that ended up being darn cheesy (the writing). So I like to skim for cheese-factor. LOL.

I am not a peeker by nature. But I have to admit, that when Stephanie Meyer's second book in the Twilight series came out, New Moon, and I got to the part where the hero (Edward) leaves for Europe and it is "over", I went straight to the back of the book! Tongue out  I thought to myself "there is no way I can put myself through reading the rest of this book if Bella and Edward are not together by the end."  This wasn't a cut and dry romance, so there was no guarantee they were going to end up together. I just had to know. Wink

That's my peeker moment. I'm it won't remain the only one. Oh, I did peek ahead (but NOT to the end, so perhaps that is skimming?) of Acheron, just to see if his heroine was who I thought it was. And it was. LOL.  Again, I just had to know. Innocent

Peeker!

I'm a peeker and proud of it!  Life throws enough surprises!

Skimmer!

Linda, this absolutely cracked me up!    Cool

I mostly rely on trading books with friends and relatives -- I purchase about five books a month, and trade them out to people for their books.

So, since I'm usually reading in a hurry, I skim if I'm under pressure to get the book to the next person!!   I never peek at the end, though -- that would drive me nuts.

oh yes skimmer and in some case a peeker, and i will freely admit.

Usually I'm not, but

Usually I'm not, but sometimes? Yeah, I admit it. I peeked at the end of Acheron because I had to know who the heroine was!

But I didn't peek at Harry Potter.

Oh yeah

Celtic - Oh yeah, if a book is kinda boring, or getting on my nerves, but I still want to see how it all resolves I'll skim my way to the end. Even skip a bunch of pages. That doesn't sound too nice, huh? But it's the truth.

Lauren - Acheron....Yes! I had to know whether or not the heroine was a certain immortal person Simi is dying to barbeque and eat! I love stories of redemption, but that would be too much for me to handle. Tongue out I had to know before I started reading so I could either rejoice or prepare myself!

Spoiler addict. . .

I never, ever peek when it comes to books, but I'm an absolute spoiler addict when it comes to television and movies.  Isn't that funny?  Especially when it comes to series like Buffy or Firefly. . .I never wanted to be surprised by a death or a coupling I wasn't prepared for. LOL

But,in books,  I like Urban Fantasy as well as romance so I've gotten pretty tough when it comes to endings that aren't HEA.

re: peeking

I have a few friends who are peekers. One says she reads the ending so she knows if she'll like the book--it seems to work for her, because she always finishes her books, whereas I quite frequently stop reading a book I don't like...

I'm a complete spoilerphobe, however. I frequently don't even read the back cover, because often it will give too much away (or hint at things, and then I figure them out accidentally). I love a well-done surprise or twist ending!

I got to the end of

I got to the end of Sherrilyn Kenyon's Acheron without peeking ahead or looking at the ending to see how things would turn out.  I don't often read a book where it MATTERS whether I look ahead. (I usually read HP and SDs where there's no surprises, there's always the HEA it's just a matter of whether it'll be done the way I want it.  Lol.  With minimal ick)

I was tempted to peek ahead or to the end of Acheron, because at times I was thinking CRAP where is this going? How can this end well?  But I thought if I looked ahead it would bias me either pos/negatively towards the ending the author chose, and I should just read start to finish and decide if I liked the ending after giving it a start to finish read with an open mind.  (I knew I was going to be fighting myself a little on this book, since I had expectations for Ash, since I've been building up expectations about him for all the other 14 books in the Dark-Hunters series that mention him)

Anyhoo...  just a note that I held back from skimming/peeking in THIS case.  Interesting exception for me.

I'm not a peeker but...

I must admit that I have jumped a few chapters if the book is slow in starting.  If it gets more interesting I go back and perservere on but happy that I know the book will get better.

I'm such a fanatic about peeking and spoiling the book that I'm almost frantic if I'm reading an anthology out of order.  Some stories don't have a page break between them and I'm so scared I'll accidently see the ending of the previous story.

There is no pleasure in having nothing to do; the pleasure is having lots to do and not doing it!

About reading SERIES in

About reading SERIES in order...  I read the Angela Knight "Magiverse" series out of order and didn't care about spoilers.

But for Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunters series, I preferred reading them in order and was kind of anal about reading them in order and letting things get revealed slowly.

It's a personal preference I guess, not only does it vary person to person, but for me it varies series/series, author to author.  Hehe.

I am a peeker when I am not

I am a peeker when I am not reading a romance. I see no reason in peeking in a romance when I an HEA is a foregone conclusion. In this case I would rather wait to see how the HEA unfolds.Undecided

Honesty

Lovin' everyone's comments and honesty. Laughing

Nancy, you make a great point. Like I said before, I'm not usually a peeker, I like the journey with a little unknown thrown in there, but then again I read a lot of romance! With just finally finishing my degree this past spring, working,  and trying to find time to write, I haven't had as much time to read, so I have pretty much been reading different romance genres (for pleasure and research, LOL). With a guaranteed HEA, I don't feel the pull to peek. And now that I think about it, the last time I read a mystery by Mary Higgins Clark (a few years ago) I majorly peeked to see if I had guessed correctly about who the killer was. OMG.Surprised Am I a peeker and I didn't even know it?  Tongue out  Well maybe not. I never peeked during Harry Potter and when I read Tempted by Megan Hart I wanted to peek to see who the heroine ended up with but I didn't. But it was really really hard not to.So glad I didn't. Because the ending was powerful and it might have ruined it for me if I knew what was going to happen.

How very

strong willed of you Janet to go through Acheron without peeking. That is an awesome accomplishment. I almost peeked several times when his pain was almost too much for me.

I despise a really weak ending in a romance...

...and so that's why I have to peek first.  Nothing kills a book for me faster than finding that the ending (even if it is a HEA) is sloppy or dangling in a way that leaves a feeling of inconclusion.  The only way I could endure a book with a cliffhanger on the end is if I know positively that there will be a following book that'll continue the story.  Otherwise, I cast the bad-ending book aside and reach for another.

Now if it's a suspense or mystery however, I'll WAIT without reading the end, because that's the whole point of the book.  Yet, a regular romance, for me, can't really be ruined by peeking at the end. Wink

oh noooo!!!!

Im so gulity of peeking Im just glad to see Im not the only one I like to read the last sentence of the book even though I know its going to end with a happliy ever after I still do it I dont know why maybe for self gratification? ugh! who cares Undecided
