I use a bookmark ....
when I was in my teens I used to follow my Mom and bend the page corners ... now that I'm paying for the books and I tend to collect books, I shudder at the thought of bending the covers and pages .... for my softcovers I use a "hardback" book cover to protect them, and I always use a book mark to mark my spot
and I only use pencil to put my initial on the first page once I've read the book

I have bent pages but nowadays I am stickler for bookmarkers even if it's a slip of paper to mark the page.

I used to bent corner but now I shudder at damaging a book like that so I use a book marker.

I'm a bookmark person
I'm a bookmark person too--especially since I took a paper conservation/repair workshop and learned how to repair bent corners, which was a pain! Made me think "what if one day this book is an out-of-print classic and a collector has to undo my bent pages?"
Though I'm not sure how that makes sense when I still write my name on the first page in pen/marker...that's a lot more permanent than a bent page.
Both!
If I have something available, I'll use a bookmark (often a folded post it!). If not, I bend.
I probably shouldn't admit that....I look like a heathen!

Ha. This question tickles my funny bone because hey, who needs a bookmark when you read a book in one sitting? lol. If I step away from a book for a moment, I make a mental note of the page number and return to the book within an hour max
However... I started doing "fav scenes" as part of my reviews. If I'm reading by my computer, I'll jot down a fav scene as I come across the scene and plug on with my reading. But if I don't feel like typing it up, or if I don't want to settle down to 1 or 2 fav scenes early on in the book (hey, there might be better scenes later on!), I'll mark the pages. I have a stack of unblogged books next to my compy, some of which have up to 10 little bits of paper or kleenex marking scenes that tickled me. When I go through the book to review, I'll probably use some of the quotes in the review part, saying hey I liked what this meant for the plot, and I'll use two probably as fav scenes.
When lacking in paper/kleenex, I have bent pages, but only in the teeniest tiny little triangle at the bottom of the page. My bends are measured in milimetres, not even half a centimetre at times. (When I read library books, i sometimes come across pages that have been bent back almost right through the midsection of the page, and I always think, wow that was a lot of effort. Did they have to be that obvious? Are they blind to page bends and need to trumpet the spot they left off?)
I tend to leave the book
I tend to leave the book open, face down. I know. It's not good for the spine, but…

A bender
I'm a bender. I know, it's awful. But I don't bend as much as I used to, honest. See the thing was I could never find a bookmark when I needed one.
But now that I'm writing, there seem to be bookmarks everywhere. From goody bags at workshops to books that come in the mailbox...I almost always have a bookmark now. And when they are at hand, I use them. So less bending going on these days.

RE: PAGE BENDER OR BOOKMARKER?
True, laying books "face down" is not good for them, but I bend pages I've already read over, along with the front cover, in order to read the book one-handed,
I also paste Bookplates within the first few pages of them with my name and the date purchased (or arrived by Post in them), in ink, so I guess there's not too much doubt about who the books belong to!
