The Story Behind the Story... Her Perfect Man by Jillian Hart

The great thing about writing connected stories is the opportunity to get to know your characters before it's time to write their stories.  If you've been reading the third McKaslin series, you know that Rebecca is the youngest sister.  She's been keeping to herself through most of the series and she's had a troublesome boyfriend, Chris.  I knew she wasn't going to end up with Chris.  The guy was not right for her, and he wasn't good to her.  So when she broke up with him in Danielle's book (Her Wedding Wish), I knew what Rebecca's story was going to be.  She was struggling with the aftereffects of a painful breakup (we've all been there) and is questioning what love is, how you know it's right and more importantly, does she want it at all?  Whatever she had with Chris is something she doesn't want to go through again.

Since I'm a firm believer in the best things in life happening when you least expect it, I just knew I had to have Rebecca meet her perfect man right in the middle of all this pain and questioning.  Chad is interested in Rebecca right from the start, but he wants to take things slow too.  I had so much fun with this story for a lot of reasons.  First of all, I set the story during summer, where Rebecca works as a day camp counselor for her church.  Chad is a volunteer for the same program.  Writing about their work days took me back to that time of my life in high school and college where I worked as a swim instructor as part of a similar day camp program.  These were some of the best summers of my life.  I was an avid distance bicyclist at the time too, and yes, I wasn't at all surprised when Rebecca took Chad on a long country bike ride.  I hope some of the warmth of my own memories comes through in the story.

In other books I've written, I have used the internet quite a bit (email, instant messaging and chats) as a way for my heroes and heroines to  communicate.  This time I had a blast using text messaging in Rebecca and Chad's courtship.  I hope you have fun with this story too.

Thanks for stopping by.
