Someone else can probably answer this more accurately,
but "imprint" doesn't actually have to do with the format that a book is in. (FWIW, "format" would be print, audio, electronic aka eBook.) "Imprint" is the different book companies that a publishing house has. Since we're at eHarlequin.com, we'll talk about Harlequin Enterprises's lines and imprints. Harlequin Enterprises imprints include MIRA and LUNA and Kimani and Steeple Hill and Red Dress Ink and, well, Harlequin and so on. So while I look the spine of a MIRA book and know that it's a Harlequin imprint, my father-in-law (who does read MIRA suspense books) probably has no idea it's affiliated with Harlequin. Ditto the LUNA and so on.
The "lines" are the different types of stories that come out each month like "Silhouette Romantic Suspense" or "Harlequin American Romance" or "Steeple Hill Cafe". Each book in a line will have certain similarities (like Harlequin Blaze is going to be steamy, Harlequin Romance sweet, you have your suspense lines and chick-lit lines). There must be a better way to say that so that it doesn't sound like the books are all the same, b/c they're not. Anyway,
are all examples of lines in several of the imprints.
Anyone else want to correct anything I've said or add on to it?

That would be my way of looking at it. Imprints would be like catagories like Harlequin. Silhouette, Spice, Mira, HQN, Kimani, Steeple Hill, Red Dress Ink, Luna, World wide Mystery. Then some of these have sub catagories (lines)

Thanks for explaining this
I think I partly understood it before but this makes it clear.
When I get a little money I buy books, and then if any is left I buy food and clothes..-- Erasmus
