Beth Cornelison discusses her latest Rancher’s Redemption, the second book in the new Coltons miniseries. Read the interview HERE.
When Clay Colton found an abandoned car on his Texas ranch—bloodstained and filled with cash—he knew he faced big trouble. But he didn't know how much trouble, until the crime scene investigator assigned to the case was the ex-wife who still haunted his dreams.…
Nothing had ever hurt Tamara Brown more than her divorce. But she had survived and made a career. Working closely with Clay to solve this deadly mystery was sweet misery—for him, too, she suspected. Was there really a chance they could somehow rekindle their love…?
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Beth Cornelison started writing stories as a child when she penned a tale about the adventures of her cat, Ajax. As a teenager, Beth swore three things: She'd never work in fast food, never attend the University of Georgia and never date a man with a mustache. Fate laughed at her oath, and she found herself working fast food (and loving it!) the summer after she graduated from high school. Four years later, she received her bachelor's degree in Public Relations from the University of Georgia and married a wonderful man with a very handsome mustache!
Beth writes from her home in Louisiana, where she lives with her husband, one son and three cats that think they are people. Beth loves to hear from her readers. You can write to her at P.O. Box 52505, Shreveport, L.A. 71135-2505 or visit her web site at www.bethcornelison.com.

Coltons
Beth
Can you tell us a bit a bout the new Coltons' series? And in particular your contribution to the series, RANCHER'S REDEMPTION.
wj
Hi!
Hi everyone! I'm so glad to be here to talk about Rancher's Redemption and the Coltons:Family First continuity! Sorry to be late arriving... a certain unwelcome guest (Named Gustav) has made things around here kinda crazy! I'm in the northern part of the state, and we didn't get slammed like the southern parishes, but... we have tree limbs down and we were without power (No computer! Sob!) for about 12 hours. I haven't ventured into town to see how much other damage our area might have gotten. Schools are out until Thursday...
But I digress... Let's talk about the COLTONS! Yea, I was so excited to be asked to participate in the Coltons continuity. I'm looking forward to hearing what readers think of the Family First series... so let me hear from you!
Take care and happy reading,
Beth C

More about the Coltons:Family First continuity
For more information about the Coltons: Family First continutiy, check out my Inside Scoop interview.
My book, Rancher's Redemption, features horse rancher Clay Colton and his ex-wife Tamara. I love a good reunion /second chance at love story and writing about Tamara and Clay's reunion (and a hot cowboy to boot!) was so fun.
And now a special announcement-- I found copies of the original Coltons continuity series and will give away those 12 books (all in very good conditon!) to one lucky person who joins in this discussion! Share your thoughts on the new Coltons series, memories of previous Coltons books, or questions about the Family First continuity and be put in the drawing to win the full set of the original Coltons Continuity (from 2000-2001).
Enjoy!

interesting
Beth, this sounds like a fun series. I especially like how you've included animals -- they all have such distinct personalities, don't they? And reunion romances are always great. The emotions of those poor, tormented characters just pop off the page...

Gail & animals
Hi Gail! Thanks for dropping in!
It was a natural fit to include the animals in the story because Clay owns a horse ranch. Besides the horses, it made natural sense that he'd have a dog and a barn cat and...who knows how many other animals. And because the animals were so much a part of his life at the ranch, it made sense that they'd be important to Tamara too... I just expanded on that premise. (And had a lot of fun with it!)
And...because I love cats, I always try to work a cat into my books. That is harder sometimes (like when the H/h are on the run as they were in In Protective Custody), but I do it! Maybe I should run a contest, something like Where's Waldo? and call it Find the cat!

Continuity...
Beth
What is the most difficult part of writing for a continuity? Or do you find the process easy? Did you have to know anything about the Coltons or had you read any of the previous series?
wj
Congrats Beth
Hey Beth and congrats on the book! I love continuities, it's always nice to catch up on characters from past books that I have grown attached to. I also like reading those that have been written by different authors, it's nice to see everyone's take on the theme and the characters.
I see your contribution involves horses and it's a 2nd chance story. What was the best part of writing this story for you? Did you experience any challenges while writing it?
~La-Tessa
www.LatessaMontgomeryAuthor.com
I have started your book
but work has been hectic and I have not gotten to finish it yet. So far it is very good. I can see Clay and Tamara changing in the way they are both thinking as the story is progressing. I think they both did not think hard enough when they got divorced.
Do you now if we find out about Ryder in any of the other books? I am thinking there is more to his story than what it seems on the surface.
Beth - Glad that you did not suffer much from Gustav. All we got in the Dallas area was some cooler weather and some wind.
Elaine
Answer for Wayne
Hi Wayne-
I was pretty fortunate with this continuity, because the bible the editors gave us detailing the backgrounds and relationships of the Texas Coltons (including all the relevant history for Coltons in previous books) was very clear and well laid out. I had all the information I needed to dive right in and write Clay and Tamara's book. That made writing the book reasonably simple for me.
I did have to tweak a few story details to make it work smoothly and I shared those tweaks with the other authors so they could incorporate those changes as needed in their books. Communicating with the other authors on the project is important since all the stories have to fit together. And while I know from the continuity "bible" what generally happens in the other authors' books, I can't wait to read the rest of the books myself to see what personal touch they put on their characters.

Answer for La Tessa
La Tessa-
The best part of writing Rancher's Redemption was simply being a part of the continuity. It was an honor to be asked, and to participate in a continuity with such great authors...Marie Ferrarella? Justine Davis? Carla Cassidy? Could I be among bigger stars?
The biggest challenge was probably those horses you mentioned... I had to do a good bit of research into Equestrian medicine! A pivotal plot point revolved around one of Clay's horses having gotten sick (backstory). So I had to figure out what disease the horse had. I had certain parameters and criteria the disease had to match (serious/life threatening, contagious, no vaccine, etc.) Nothing fit just right!
I ended up having to tweak a few story details to get a disease to fit the story.
Fortunately, I live in an area with lots of farms and I could call a local large animal vet to ask my questions!

In the works...
Well, at the end of July, I turned in "Annie's book". For those of you who read my July release DUTY TO PROTECT, you'll remember Annie as Ginny's client. When I finished writing DUTY TO PROTECT, I said, Annie needs a HEA! And my editor agreed!
So working title is DEFENSIVE MANEUVERS, and it is scheduled for June 2009.
SInce returning from RWA in SF I've been working on a fun new trilogy that (fingers crossed) I'm hoping the SRS editors will like...I'll stay quiet for now on the theme but the connection is three sisters from my fictional Louisiana town of Lagniappe.
Thanks for asking!

Finally finished the book
and it was worth the wait. I really enjoyed how both characters changed and realized that the mistakes were on both sides and not just one. I was happy to see Georgie and Nick and Emmie in this book also.
Good luck on getting the 3 book series sold and looking forward to Annie's book next year.

question
Hi Beth and everyone--I am looking forward to reading this continuity. I already have the first book and will be ordering yours soon Beth. Do I have to have read the other Coltons before reading this continuity? I never read any of the other ones.
Mary
Mary - you do not have
to read the series to read these. The first book gives a background on the family. This is a different branch than the one that the series was about but you do see some of the same characters. This was a good series so if you can find the original Colton's series it is a very good read.

Thanks

Mary- This continuity stands alone. But remember...I'm going to have a drawing for the complete set of the original twelve Colton books at the end of the month... Stay tuned! You could win!
And anyone else who wants to win needs to leave a comment or question here to be in the drawing!!

Coltons
I am really looking forward to reading the Coltons continuity since I live in Texas and always like reading stories set in Texas. I have the first book but haven't had a chance to order yours yet (but I really plan on doing so really soon).
PS. I'm really glad you were not too badly affected by dear old Gustav. I have a friend who live in Shreveport and visit her when I can. I was through there on my trip to the Smokey Mountains but had to give it a miss on the way back home. I live in Texas on the coast and am presently worried about Ike.

Yikes, Ellen! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Ike dies down and doesn't cause the destruction and inconvenience that Gustav did. Shreveport didn't get much out of Gustav, but my part of the state (east side) was drenched and we had local flooding.
Sounds like a good Coltons book is the perfect remedy for a weekend that is likely to be rainy and gray!
Take care! We'll be praying for your safety!

Beth and Ellen
Beth--thanks for the reminder about the drawing. I'll keep my fingers crossed!
Ellen--I hope Ike does not hit Texas too hard. I'm sure you are holding your breath waiting.
Mary
IKE
Unfortunately Ike looks to be a very bad storm - one of the worse to hit Texas with a storm surge of 10-15 feet (this is how high the water will be pushed ashore) and winds of over 115 mph. And it should hit Friday. And unfortunately I am in the area of probablility with it coming ashore here or very close. So if no one hears from me for awhile you'll know why.

Inside Scoop contest- extended!
Hi all-
So...the hurricanes are gone and the power's back on...let's talk books! :-)
Who's had a chance to read RANCHER'S REDEMPTION or COLTON'S SECRET SERVICE yet?
I just read Marie Ferrarella's book (Book one in the Colton's Family First) and thought she did a great job! Georgie's daughter, Emmie was a hoot. So precocious! (She was one of the most fun to write when I wrote RANCHER'S REDEMPTION-- the barbecue scene :-))
Contest Alert! As I've said in an earlier post, I'm having a drawing at the end of October for anyone who posts comments to this thread about Rancher's Redemption or the Colton's Continuity. The prize? Twelve (12) books! That's right, I found a complete set of the original fan-favorite Coltons Continuity (circa 2000), the series that spawned all the in line Coltons continuities that followed (including the current series in Romantic Suspense). I'll draw for one lucky winner to receive the complete original series from the names of folks who post comments about the Colton's books (especially RANCHER'S REDEMPTION!
) to this thread through the end of October. So grab your copy of RANCHER'S REDEMPTION and stop by to join the discussion!

Rancher's Redemption
I just finished reading "Rancher's Redemption" and it was so good I read it without putting it down. Now I need to go back and read the first book in the series. The story was not only suspenseful but the characters were true to life IMO. I felt that Clay and Tamara could have been real people with all their misunderstandings and their inability to really "talk" to each other. I will have to admit I had pretty much figured out the "who done it" before the end but it did not ruin the story for me.

Hey Beth, congrats on your addition to the new Coltons Continuity.
I only went back to reading a few years ago. While scouring the used bookstores, I found a couple of the original Coltons books. I loved them. So much, in fact, that I carry a list with me in an attempt to collect the complete series. It seems like a puzzle with pieces missing without all the books in the series, you know?
Now, as well as the old series, I have the new one to look forward to. Fantastic. Thanks.

Hi, Beth!
I love continuity series! I think I read one of the original Coltons series, but I can't remember now which one. (I read a lot.) I remember the Texas setting, though.
I'm glad you were okay in Gustav & Ike. We lost a lot of tree branches in the first one (including a huge branch off our largest oak), but only had a lot of rain in the second, so we were thankful for that!
