All Hallow's Joy by Christine Merrill

All Hallow's Joy by Christine Merrill

October, 1814
Cornwall

With a storm looming over the coast and the night darkening, Jack Kendall thinks he is lucky to find an inn. But as he gets closer, he begins to sense that all is not right with the place, and that he may be in mortal danger.

He considers getting on his trusty horse, Ajax, and riding for the next hotel. But then he sees a pale, but beautiful lady in the window above him, and he is compelled to enter, sealing his fate.

Jack’s situation grows ever more precarious as the night progresses, pitting him against evil forces. But the most challenging test of his gallantry—and desire—is the mysterious and haunting Joy….

Hmmmm....

Interesting start to this story.  Was the woman he saw actually a ghost?  Guess I'll be back to find out more tomorrow!

Hugs,
April

At the end of the day, it's night.

I agree, April

Very interesting beginning and premise to the story.

Hmmm, this is getting more

Hmmm, this is getting more interesting and a little tense.   Wonder what is going on in this tavern!  I'm want to read more...

Interesting 2nd Chapter

Wonder what is going on -- probably nothing good, except Joy.

Is it tomorrow yet?

Curiouser...

and curiouser.  Is Joy the woman in the window?  If not, who is the woman?

Ugh... I hate waiting, but at least it's just until tomorrow, not next week!

Hugs,
April

At the end of the day, it's night.

love historicals and i can't

love historicals and i can't wait to see what happens next.  definitely think that the girl in the window was a ghost.

Finally...

...have electricity back and was able to read the first 3 chapters!  What a good start to the story!  It's very intriguing and a bit spooky, which is so appropriate for this time of year.  It holds out a lot of promise for some heat later on, too, which is always good.Wink

Can't wait for the next chapter!

Enjoying this!

Do you think that Joy was the woman he saw in the window or does she have a twin -- or maybe she was a ghost?  I am wondering if the bartender and all the men in the bar are smugglers, and maybe holding Joy, and if she has a twin, prisoner?

I'm ready for tomorrow's read already!

Sounds like a set-up

With Joy having been anxious and reluctant when Jack first asked her to join him and then having received a nod of approval from the bartender, I'm guessing that the bartender hopes to use Joy to set Jack up (to be robbed, perhaps?) or at least to distract him while some mischief or something more sinister takes place.  Hmmm.

Sounds like Joy is an unwilling pawn, and I, too, wonder about her relationship to the woman he first saw in the window.

All Hallow's Joy

Well this story piqued my interest from the get-go. Now another little twist to the mix and I can't wait to find out what happens next. Who is Joy really? What are her secrets? We still don't know if she was the figure in the window or not. What of the locals, wary of a stranger/traveller or just one that is English speaking....? Hmmm... so many things to find out as the story unfolds. Thanks for the great story....

hmmm

Now if that isn't a warning to peek the interest of an adventurous man, I don't know what is. Of course he can't leave now. With the added enticement of Joy, the poor man doesn't have a choice. LOL Can't wait for tomorrows chapter.

Curator for Harlequin Historicals My Space , Facebook,

Did anyone else....

get to read 2 chapters?  I was surprised and pleased to read Thursday AND Friday chapters!!!  Of course, that now means I have to wait longer for chapter 6.

I'm enjoying this story and greatly confused/intrigued at what's going on at the inn.  So, I'll now have to wait until Monday for more!

Hugs,
April

At the end of the day, it's night.

Thought it was just me

April, I got to read two chapters, also, but with my electricity having been off for 3 days, then back on, then briefly off again and back on, I thought perhaps I had gotten confused before and skipped a chapter.  Too bad that will leave us without a chapter tomorrow.

I am completely intrigued and more than a little bit creeped out by this story.  What is a genteel woman who shows signs of being educated doing in this place?  And how odd that she would go into his arms so easily and be willing to do whatever he'd like if he will leave immediately to avoid danger.  (Of course, if he is to leave immediately, then that doesn't leave time for her to do much of anything.)  Hmmm.

I, too, read 2 chapters

Almost every chapter so far could have been a cliffhanger, and Chapter 5 didn't disappoint.

What is going on, and who is Joy?  Very intrigueing!  Of course he won't leave now after her promise to do anything he wants if he promises her to leave before night!Tongue out  Also, what about the Mad Lords of Penlowen?  Another mystery...

I will miss reading a chapter tomorrow, but really enjoyed reading two of them today.Embarassed  Thanks for a great read!

Everyone, have a great weekend!Embarassed

Well....

Well, April & JV, I guess you got the luck of the draw, I just logged on and was able to read chapter 4. I'll be waiting for Friday to see what happend next , so don't spill the beans.... :)

This story just pulls you in and is getting more mysterious after each chapter, I can hardly wait to see what unfolds tomorrow....

I also got to read 2

I also got to read 2 chapters.  Very exciting, unfortunately, long wait until Monday.  :(

I got to read Friday's

I got to read Friday's chapter also, should have been a few more hours until I could get to itLaughing but I don't mind reading it early!  This is an interesting read and has left us hanging at every chapter...   makes you wonder what Joy is doing there...    was she kidnapped?  has he Jack walked into a smuggler's den?  Can't wait for Monday, but I have a feeling we're not going to get many answers yet!

Oh yeah, today is not

Oh yeah, today is not Firday. I got to read two chapters also. LOL

Nancy

No worries, Trice!

I never give away 'secrets', as I enjoy surprises.  Am interested in y'all's reaction to tomorrow's chapter, though.

Hugs,
April

At the end of the day, it's night.

It's technically Friday

but I'll just agree that this has been one cliff-hanger chapter after another. Monday seems so far away.

I'm getting in the mood for Halloween! LOL My neighbors put up decorations and we bought some pumpkins. This story is just what I needed. Fall is my favorite time of year.

Curator for Harlequin Historicals My Space , Facebook,

I think....

the tavern owner/bartender wanted to drug Jack, and Joy wouldn't let him.  So, she spilled the ale on the way to his table to keep him from drinking the drug, and the bartender got mad.

UGH!  Now to wait til Tuesday!

Hugs,
April

At the end of the day, it's night.

This story is kind of

This story is kind of frustrating.  It hints at things but I stay confused.Embarassed

That chapter ending was

That chapter ending was bizarre! You could be right April.

I'm a little funcused too FF...

...or...

perhaps the bartender is part of a con game where they set up patrons to rob them, and he was afraid Joy had warned Jack away.  Who knows?  The story is very mysterious so far.

I suspect that Jack's little charade of drunken patron whose only interest is in fondling the help will change, though, to protect Joy from the cuffing the bartender seems ready to dole out to her.  Will this spur him into a quick escape with Joy, or will the ruse continue?  Hmm.

Ahhh

But the mystery spices things up. Hehhee

I think the barman will be in for a surprise before he ever gets a chance to slap her for spilling the ale.

Curator for Harlequin Historicals My Space , Facebook,

Ahh well....

April, JV and everyone else, I agree this story is one surprise after another, the sign of a great book. This story could go off in so many different directions.... loving it! Chapter 5 and 6 are great, looking forward to tomorrow's to see how Jack reacts.... Laughing

Rats!

We've been left hanging again.Embarassed  I also think the bartender was either planning to drug Jack or maybe kill him.

He's making a BIG mistake coming after Joy while she's with Jack.

Can hardly wait until tomorrow.

the bartender sure has a

the bartender sure has a strong hold on Joy...  hope Jack takes him up on teh guinea and takes her to his room.  Maybe we'll find out more about what is going on in that strange inn and Jack can help her escape the hold on her...

I agree, Papaya!

How evil a man is this bartender?  Seems like VERY, to me.  The best way to protect Joy, and truly Jack as well, is for Jack to pay the money and take her with him.  If he was going to smack her at spilling ale, what would he do if Jack were to refuse?

Hugs,
April

At the end of the day, it's night.

Good question, April

Obviously the bartender doesn't have Joy's best interest at heart, nor Jack's I feel sure.  I think Jack should take Joy upstairs with him and find a way to escape with her.

Perhaps that's a twin sister we saw in the window upstairs, and Joy i being so cowed and subservient to protect her from something.  In that case, Jack would have to save her, too.

Of course, this is a Hallowe'en type of read, so the imagine in the window upstairs could be any sort of unusual thing.  I'm fascinated to find the answers to some of these mysteries.

Oh,,,

I nvr the type to read ghost story nor see it...this story is very interesting...the bartender seem to have strng hold on joy.i afraid to find out that joy is not even human,,i believe that the drink was something to kill jack..coz joy seem relief to spill it.maybe the person jack saw at the window is someone joy love so much that he held captive ..hate to read one page at a time...

oooo

what's Jack's choice going to be. I agree, April/Cathy/Papay/JV/ Hazelnutz, I think it would be in Jack and Joy's best interests for Jack to take the innkeeper's offer and whisk Joy away from the man. At least, as far as a room to see if he can discover what's really going on in this very strange inn... can't wait to see what happens next.... Surprised

Trice

I'm wondering

if Joy does go upstairs with Jack, as I'm sure she will, will she tell Jack anything that is happening, or why the bartender has such a hold on her.  I still think that Joy has a twin and is trying to protect her, but only time will tell.

I really love the fact that the end of each chapter is a cliffhanger.  It keeps us on our toes, that's for sure.

Now I

TRULY don't like the bartender!

April digs around in the barn.  She finds rope and a dirty old rag.  Making her way towards the door to exit with both items now in her possession, she all but trips over a stick.  Picking it up to throw out of her way, she notices it's sharply pointed on one end, perfect for her plan.

Who wants to help me torture the bartender for his behavior towards Joy?

Laughing

Hugs,
April

At the end of the day, it's night.

Well as I see it her answer

Well as I see it her answer has to be yes.  She obviously is not choosing to do what she is doing.  This story is moving to slow for me, I want to read more of it now!  I have so many questions that I want to know the answers too!

I'll help you take on the bartender April!

Count me in, April!

What a lovely man the bartender is!  What I can't understand is why Joy is looking so disappointed in Jack's answer.  Surely she knows what fate would befall her if he declined, and surely she knows from the other times he has "saved" her from a beating that he is trying to protect her and won't use her as the bartender suggests.  Of course, perhaps she's playing her part, as expected, in this charade.

I'm with you, papaya.  I am ready for some answers, and it's frustrating having to wait.

April, let's go get him!

I don't like the bartender either.  He's way too smarmy for me!

Is Joy playing out a part, and is indeed uppset with Jack because first, he is staying after she asked him to go; and second, he is making plans to have her with him all night, and she wasn't prepared for that.

Darn, but these chapters seem way too short.  I want more and more and more...

The last chapter was very short!

I also think that she should be somewhat grateful that Jack "paid" for her.  He will keep her safe -- though who is going to keep him safe?  I think that she spilled the drink on purpose -- was it drugged?

Great story for this time of year!

Lidia

Once again...

...Joy doesn't seem to get it.  Jack has saved her from harm a couple of times already through one sham or another, so I would think she'd understand that this show he is putting on is to save her again and that she'd be grateful for it.

I'm hoping for at least an understanding between the two of them for tomorrow's read because so far every day has brought additional mysteries but no understanding.  While it's intriguing, I find myself needing for them to make a real connection.

Poor Joy

She just doesn't understand that Jack just wants to help her.  She has been so abused that she probably doesn't trust any man at all.

Will a twin sister be in Joy's bedrrom?  Joy seemed both angry and defient.  What will happen once Jack is in her room.

There are just so many questions without any answers so far.  I want more and more of this to read.

I'm thinking this online

I'm thinking this online read format is not doing this story justice. We've had 9 chapters (granted they are very short chapters) and still don't have a clue what is going on except it seems to be something sinister.  They are still in the same evening.  The read is moving very slow for me. I want some answers and I'm not getting any.  Things are not making a lot of sense to me at this point.  If Joy were truly downtroden, you would think the defiance would have left her and she would be a lot more fearful then she is.  Don't get me wrong, I'm with April in taking out the mean bartender, but it just seems like things are not adding up here...

Intriguing

I think it is intriguing myself. For once, it is a book that doesn't cut straight to the chase. It definitely makes you leaving for more. It's possible she could be held against her will. The bartender making her do things she doesn't want to do. Holding a secret she cannot tell. I, personally, cannot wait until tomorrow to find out what is going to happen next. For one thing we know, she is trying her hardest to protect him.

ARRRGH,  now we have to

ARRRGH,  now we have to wait until Monday!

This gets curioser and curioser

One moment Joy is defiant; the next she is meek.  Then, she's ardent.  One minute she seems to despise him for taking the bartender up on his offer, and the next she's back to trying to protect him.  It's obvious she does not belong there and is kept there either by physical intimidation or by some other nefarious means of coercion (blackmail?).

I must say that as much as I like a hot story, for this couple, this was not the time for hanky panky.  This was the time to explain a few things and make plans for a safe escape.  Once that is accomplished and they are safely away from that nasty place, then there can be time for other...uh...diversions.

Besides, he knows he is being set up and thinks (or thought for a brief moment, at least) that she might be part of the plot against him.  I wouldn't think that would rev his engines.  Adding to all that, she appears inexperienced.  Instead of spending the time showing her how a lady should be kissed, for heavens sake, he should have kissed her just long enough to close the door and preserve the illusion that he intended to bed her.  Oh, well.  Now that's he's stepped back a bit, maybe we'll start getting some answers!

Too bad we have to wait until Monday. This is rather frustrating.

This is so frustrating

Christine is continually keeping us on edge, wiithout giving us any answers.

Hopefully, we will start getting some ideas on Monday.

Have a great weekend, all!

UGH

I was hoping if I waited to read a few chapters all at once rather than one a day, it would be easier to wait for the next bunch of chapters. NOPE! I'm still full of questions, still want to join April and her plans of torture, still confused about Joy. I have a feeling we won't start to get some answers until at least chapter 15 or so.
