Interview with the heroine:

1. Kate Wallace, tell me the most interesting thing about you.
I’ve had a very interesting life. When I was a kid, I wanted to go out into the real world, not be stuck in small-town Texas. I was a journalist in New York and Houston and worked as a spokes person for a congressman in Florida. Those years were busy and very exciting.

2. What do you do for fun?
Back then, I didn’t really have time to have fun. Since I returned to Silver Lake, TX, I like to garden and spend time with my niece and best friend.

3. What do you put off doing because you dread it?
I don’t want to make a decision about the future. When my career ended in Florida, I came home to take care of my sister and evaluate my life. What’s next? I don’t know, and I don’t want to think about it.

4. What are you afraid of most in life?
It was really hard to come home. I’d left here so certain I’d succeed in anything I tried. I had to come home after a failure. That was humiliating. Failing again frightens me.

5. What do you want out of life?
I want to be the young woman who left Silver Lake—filled with confidence and enthusiasm and with a deep faith. I lost all of those in the past ten years. I’d like to find them again but am not certain how to.

6. What is the most important thing to you?
Family. That answer surprises me because my future career and success had always been important until I came home. And my faith. As a child, I had such a strong relationship with God. I don’t know how to get that back.

7. Do you read? If so, what is your favorite type of book to read?
I read non-fiction and newspapers.

8. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Not being so overconfident. I’d like to be more sensitive to the feelings of others.

9. Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and why that pet?
I have a darling buff cocker spaniel named Coco. I got her twelve years ago, when I started working in Houston. When I was in high school, I said I was going to be rich and famous and have a teacup poodle named Coco, but when I saw my cocker, I fell in love with her.

10. If you could travel back in time, where would you go and why?

I’d go back then years, to a Sunday morning when my parents were both alive. I’d love to wake up and smell the bacon my father was cooking and hear to my mother trying to get me up to get dressed for church.
