Harlequin's 100,000 Book Challenge ~ Making a Difference

Living in poverty at three times the national average…
Unemployment rates up to 80 percent…
Dropout and suicide rates higher than any other demographic …

Those are just some of the barriers to success for children who live on Indian reservations, which make it difficult for dreams to take root and grow. But the National Center for Family Literacy in partnership with Harlequin is hoping to overcome some of those barriers and give wings to dreams with our Book Challenge program. Other NCFL programs for American Indians have resulted in more than 850 adults earning their high school diploma or GED and a 50 percent decline in the need for special education services for children who have completed the BIE-funded Family and Children Education (FACE) program, and we hope that our book donation to the NCFL will add to those results.

“The stepping stone to overcoming the intractable and systemic obstacles for American Indians can be summed up in two words— family literacy,” NCFL president and founder Sharon Darling said.

When we challenged our readers to review 100,000 books this year, we promised to donate an equivelent number to the National Center for Family Literacy's FACE program.  We sent our first shipment of books out to the NCFL in the Spring and we're just about to send out our next one.  In the meantime, I thought you'd like to see some of our book recipients enjoying a good read thanks to your efforts, and THANK YOU.  And remind you that it's not too late to read for the cause...you can add a book review to count for the Challenge HERE!

Hey Star - you forgot the "book" in that sentence

LOL

Jayne - I'm reading as much and as fast as I can but I still need a hubby who loves me and two kids who love me, so I HAVE to make time to take RaeAnne's cruisemate's advice - to love 'em hard and love 'em often Wink

but I'm on track for the four digit number all the same

Like the others...

I too find it great to see some of the faces that are benefiting from our love of reading.
And helping families so that they may help themselves ~ that is just the best!

Way to go Harlequin ~ and thank you so much Jayne for letting us know; it certainly adds incentive to keep up the reading!
