I have to start this by targeting awesome author Debra Salonen with a tackle/hug/kiss combo. Not only is she one of the most wonderful humans in the world (and no, that's not my opinion, it's a fact.) but she inspired me with the theme of this blog. Her Top Ten Harlequin Moments were at once wildly funny, choke-up touching and as real and memorable as she is.
OK, so on to my own Top Ten Harlequin moments. In reverse chronological order.
Moment 10: Harlequin party at Nationals.
Dancing and screaming and giggling the night away in Harlequin's in-cre-di-ble party(ies) in the best company ever is the ONE time a year I get to have unbridled fun. It fuels me for the rest of the year.
Thank you Harlequin and everyone who toils to bring us those perfect evenings year after year!
Moment 9: First book-of-mine-on-the-shelves sighting.
This year in San Francisco. It was The Desert Lord's Bride (my fourteenth book sold, twelfth book out...long story)
I was like...hey, it's real. The physical evidence was incontrovertible! :-D
Thanks everyone involved in getting my book to that shelf!
Moment 8: First Harlequin Authors signing.
Every year I sign at the Literacy Signing at Nationals (and each signing is a Harlequin moment unto itself...) But this year, I found myself counted among some of my ‘heroine' authors. I brought baklava to strengthen my claim to being among them. :-D
Thanks to these authors who made this event possible, to my editors who invited me to take part, and to the readers who asked for my signature. J
Moment 7: First paranormal sale.
So far, I've sold romances set in the world of glamor and power (Desire), mixed with edge-of-seat medical drama (Medicals) or with an intense dose of action/adventure (Bombshell).
Now I've finally sold something in my first love. Romances set in complex urban fantasy settings, pervaded by dark sensuality and world-shaking stakes.
Selling my Nocturne Bite felt like turning into a road I've been longing to take for so many years.
Thanks to Natashya Wilson, my editor, to Tara Gavin, Nocturne's senior editor, and all the creative people who've made paranormals such a fertile field with never-ending potential.
Moment 6: Second mini-series sale to Desire.
It's that second sale that tells you that they think they made the right decision when they bought the first series! :-D
Thanks to my editor and to MJ, Desire's former senior editor. Wishing you both the fulfillment of all your dreams!
Moment 5: First book sale to Desire.
Yep, I sold one book first. It was while my editor was reading that book's partial that I zapped up the other two books' proposals. The sales of the rest of what became my first mini-series for Desire, Throne of Judar, came a month and a half later.
But that first sale to Desire felt like selling for the first time all over again!
Thanks to...see above in Moment 6.
Moment 4: First Bombshell sale.
Selling to a new line was a vital expansion, a validation.
Though Bombshell is no more, I'd do it again. From the freedom-of-exploring-my-writing-boundaries exercise, to dealing-with-harsh-realities-of-the-business lessons, from the heights of creating characters many still love, to the depths of having to say goodbye to them (hopefully not permanently) it was an invaluable experience.
Thanks to Leslie Wainger and Natashya Wilson for the opportunity and all the guidance and support.
Moment 3: First book sale.
During my first conference, my editor then took me to a deserted corridor and said, "We want to buy your book."
I bet she didn't know she'd placed her life at great risk.
I pinned her to the wall with the force of my elation.
What ensued was the most adrenaline-gushing time of my life.
The news made it to eHarlequin within minutes, and the marvelous hosties put up the first-ever (?) sale party thread.
It was all pure magic.
Thanks to Kate Paice, Sheila Hodgson and Karin Stoecker who all gave my book the thumbs up, and to all the incredible people who were part of that moment, helped make it life-changing.
Moment 2: First eHarlequin sighting.
On my first foray on the internet.
It changed the course of my life.
Thanks to everyone who invented computers and the internet.
Thanks to Harlequin for putting up this site.
And MEGA thanks to every author, host and member for the support, the mine of information and the hundreds of hours of companionship and pure fun you provided this isolated author.
I wouldn't be here today without everyone I mentioned above.
Moment 1: First Harlequin book sighting.
I was eleven. The book was a zillionth-hand and battered accordingly. I felt I'd found Aladdin's lamp. I would have done anything to have that book.
Turned out I only had to ask for it. My mother bought it for me. And I had it. It was an epic adventure struggling to read it. Then to read more. Thousands more. And it all somehow led me here.
Thanks to my mom, who drove thousands of miles to and from the only bookstore that had Harlequins to fill my insatiable need. Thanks to her and dad for spending a fortune to feed that need, for believing me when I said that, like all the passions that took me over, Harlequins were improving the quality of my life and mind. I wouldn't be here today without their faith and unstinting efforts.
I have more moments, but that's the great thing about being involved in an ever-evolving endeavor. There are always new moments to savor, to celebrate (and to suffer, but we're focusing on the positive here J)
So do you hope to/are trying to/did turn any of your passions into more, a career even? And what do you do when your child is consumed by a passion? Do you worry? Do you support? Both?
I'm offering two copies of my September release, The Desert King, to two commentators!
Olivia Gates lives with her alpha husband, lovely daughter and their white Angora cat. Her husband is her adviser and, with her incredible mother, her staunchest supporter. Her daughter gives her plot ideas, and they're all along the lines of a doctor trying to reach his patients on a hot rainbow barefoot. With an imagination like that, Olivia's encouraging her to write her own books. Olivia's cat curls up on her lap, cramping her and critically watching the story unfold on the screen, then tries to edit the manuscript to his liking by walking all over the keyboard.

Hi Olivia Lovely info
Hi Olivia
Lovely info here, I love the covers on your books. The part about your Mom driving all those miles to get your Harlequin books brought me back when in my 20's my Mom was reading the Dseires books and I came in from work asking what are they she gave me one to read and after that I was hooked. I love Harlequin books.
All the best
Penney
Happy reading!

Loved
that your parents encouraged your passion. So which genre are you gonna try for next, because the two genres I have tried have been wonderful(haven't tried the bombshells yet, and I'll be getting the Bite as soon as it comes out.)
Actually I did sort of turn a passion into more than a pastime. I had a love for plants and gardening. So I went to college and took a Horticurural Technian course for two years, graduated and worked in a greenhouse for 1 1/2 years(half a year part time, year full time). Now that I can't work any longer I still garden for family and friends, plus my friends say my balcony looks like a jungle in the summer

Hi, OliviaThank you
Hi, Olivia
Thank you sharing your HQ moments, very lovely.
In regards to your question: My dh & I both are very supportive of our kids' interest/passion/career planning. My ds loves photography & cooking. He is now attending a culinary arts school, we are his honest critics for his cooking (the downside is receipe-tasting is not good to my weight control
). My dd has chosen to join the Air-Force, I have been biting my nails ever since (my dh is my pillar), we are very proud of her achievement & independency (she was very rebellious in her teens).

Hi Olivia
I too own The Desert King. I just wanted to post because I really enjoyed your Top 10 list. Between Medicals, Bombshells, Desires and Nocturn too. What a great variety of series. No wonder we all love your books, You write with heart, thought and passion.

Oh, I love your moments!
I love that your folks have supported you in so many ways!! I hope one year that your mom will come to RWA with you! (Oh, btw, I don't need a copy of the book as I already have both the print and ebook versions WHEEE!).
I remember when you sold to Bombshell. That was the year that I started hanging out here at eHQ and the books that I was discovering were the MedRoms and the Bombshells! And your first MedRom was one of my first MedRoms!! (Yours, Gill/Roger's and Jennifer Taylor's were the first, quickly followed by so many others.) I remember how excited we all were when you sold to Bombshell . . .
I also remember how excited we were when you sold to Desire! Now Nocturne, hmmm, I don't read Nocturnes but I might have to start . . .

>> So do you hope to/are trying to/did turn any of your passions into more, a career even? And what do you do when your child is consumed by a passion? Do you worry? Do you support? Both? <<
Am I hoping to turn a passion into more? Yes, I have dabbled in writing for a number of years. Well, I have done some personal essay type writing and been published in a collection of essays and had several essays published in a magazine in the past. But now I am trying to write believeable fiction. My hat is tipped to all you lovely writers that accomplish this often.
As far as children being consumed by passions. I have one child that started requesting bagpiping lessons when she was a preschooler. We let her keep asking until she was large enough to get started. We spent many a summer carting her all around to bagpiping competitions, not to mention dropping her off at bagpipe camp -- where the ages ranged from children younger than her to people in their later years. Then when she decided to go to an engineering school we supported her in that decision. She completed her undergraduate work and is now in seminary.
Our youngest, when she was four, saw a Cape Breton fiddler and decided that she wanted to 'play like that'--at the age of five she started fiddle lessons. She is now a senior in highschool, so, she is doing the college search. She has high aspirations and wants to go to some of the hardest to get into colleges on the east coast (USA). My dh would not let me squelch her dreams. This past spring she was awarded a significant scholarship to a university that is ranked 35th in the USA. Application fees have been waived, but this college has never turned down a student who has received one of their scholarships. Since she discovered this college also has a 3+2 degree program in ethnomusicology, she is excited. She will still apply to the other colleges, one is located a mile from one of her fiddle mentor's house, but she is no longer worried about whether she gets in or not. And now I am no longer worrying either. But I have been a bad mother--I have accused both my dh and my dd of being college snobs...and lived to tell the tale. This dd has worked hard and because she is ranked no. 2 in the class and she is applying to top schools, she has teachers and guidance counselors in our tiny, rural district bending over backwards to help her.

Christa!
They truly went above and beyond. In every way. I only hoped my father would have lived long enough to see the fruit of his patience and giving. My mother is still providing me with all the support and help possible to make living this as easy and rewarding as possible.
I'm definitely always writing Romance, and paranormal romance is where I hope to continue writing, along with Desires.
I'm thrilled you think so!!
Hope you continue to enjoy my books there!
And you're not interested in trying? Or just don't have the time and the TBR is teetering? If you'd like to read them, let me know. You probably won't find them now, and I'd love to send you copies.
Ooh, thanks! I hope you'll enjoy it!!
Loving plants and having them love you back, blooming for you, is a blessing and a talent. A power even. One I regretfully don't have in the least.
I'd love to see your balcony in the summer, and I hope your family and friends know how lucky they are to have you gardening for them!!

I was surprised
about how intense the course was. I went in thinking flowers how hard can it be. Stupid, stupid me. we learn pest and diseases, soils, lawn care, weeds, landscaping. greenhouse production, ornalantel tress, shubs and flowers, houseplants, floral design or arborculture(we could choose either arborculture or floral design here) We even had a 6 hour lecture on nails and screws because one of the assignments was to draw a deck and in it we had to label what screws and nails we used. But the lecture also taught which to use if building gazebo, shed etc. My balcony is my little retreat in the summer. I have a lounge chair out there so on nice days just sit out there and read.
My TBR is teetering. I'm trying to cut back on ordering(I say this after I just ordered 10 books today
) but I only got 20 this month(that half what I normally get
) Plus I think the first two Bombshells I tried were more paranormal

Thank *you* so much for reading them. Makes me feel like you've also now shared them with me!
Wow, what a great passion. But do watch that weight. The better he becomes, the bigger the problem, it seems!!
I totally sympathize with you on the nail biting. I was discussing something like that with my Dh a couple of days ago, as in how on earth I'll curb my anxiety enough to let my daughter as much as drive or go to college one day not that far in the future!
But what an achievement. On all of your sides. Wishing her a soaring success, and you as much peace of mind and serenity as possible!
Oooooh, WOW! Both formats!! My, what a huge compliment that is. You made my week!
Phew. I was wondering if they'd arrived! I sent a few books to others at the same time, and no one told me they'd received anything. Now I'm having images of my books floating around the world, being used to clean glass!
Thank you so much for all your praise. I hope I continue to deserve it!
