My Harlequin Moment: Kate Walker

harlequin moment OK, so my excuse is this -  I was at the eHarlequin Pajama/Pyjama party. In San Francisco. And as those two spellings of - er - of PJs might just tell you, I actually live in the UK. Lincolnshire UK to  be exact.

So to get to SF I had to travel a l-o-n-g way. So I was slightly jet-lagged. And then by the time I was at the PJ party I was a little bit more ‘lagged' because I'd not slept properly, and I'd been to several other parties - and by the time I was at  the PJ party it was heading for midnight. And I wasn't even sure what day that particular midnight was on.

So when Jayne and Dream asked for my Harlequin moment, I thought they wanted an eHarlequin moment. And I scribbled one down on a piece of paper. (It's the one under E below- the one with the crowing, if you're interested)  and went back to enjoying myself.

The next thing I know is that apparently I had  ‘volunteered' to be part of the Blog Bash. And it's not an eHarlequin moment - it's a Harlequin moment. And I can't manage that - not just one moment!  There are too many wonderful moments. After all, I've been published since 1984 - and that's a lot of moments.

Ah - but . . .  I can see a way round this - so here you are  my great  big, Harlequin MOMENT

M is for my Mother. This is a bitter-sweet memory. In the same month that I received my ‘call' (though back in those prehistoric days, it wasn't a ‘call' but a letter from an editor called Mary Stannard) we also learned that my mother had terminal cancer. So if ever there was a time for the good news to arrive when we were all still together to celebrate it then it was that July. Mother had always known how much I dreamed of being a writer and achieving that dream without being able to tell her just wouldn't have been the same. Sadly she didn't live to see my first book. But she knew it was coming and she was able to boast to everyone she knew about it. And I can remember the expression on her face when I told her.

O is for all the openings that writing for Harlequin has brought me - but there's always one special opening that never ever loses the excitement for me - and that's opening the parcel of the brand new copies of the brand new book  when it's fresh from the press. So way back in December 1984, I first opened the box of the copies of The Chalk Line and saw my book as a real book. I kept that book beside my bed just so that I could wake up and see it and make sure it wasn't a dream.

M again - for meetings. Not sitting round the table, formal business meetings, but meeting all the wonderful authors whose books I've read and loved  over the years - and who now I get to call my friends in real life. Michelle Reid who I met at the very first author day  in 1995, and Anne McAllister a couple of years later.  Then there's Holly Jacobs,  Sandra Marton, Trish Wylie, Abby Green . . . .  and that's before I start adding in all the friends from the message boards and  hosties, Jayne, Dee,  Dream and Rae . .

coronationAnd meeting those friends didn't just happen here at home in the UK. It  was an Experience that happened Everywhere.  One of the most important Harlequin - and eHarlequin moments was when I went to my very first RWA conference, in Denver in 2002.

I arrived  feeling shy and  scared, sure that no one would talk to me. But  I had made so many friends through the eHarlequin message boards that I had no need to worry. I arrived feeling scared and left feeling like a Queen - literally. If ever you've wondered why I have the nickname Queen Kate, well that came from this time. When there was a writers' group on eHarlequin  who were know as the Gonnabeez. Formed by Rae and Dee they adopted me as their Queen Bee - and Hostie Dee even performed a coronation  ceremony at the very first PJ party I attended. (I wonder if I'm the first Queen ever to be crowned in her nightie!).

shirt Another Gonnabee, Mel Cox embroidered a special shirt for me - I still have the tiara, and the shirt. They are treasures to remind me of this special eHarlequin moment.

And without the Beez I would never have written  the12 Point Guide to Writing Romance - it was an IM conversation with Dee, and then late a Gonnabeez chat that brought that idea into life - and idea that's now in its second edition  - the first one having sold out.

And eHarlequin  gave me another moment - this time one I shared with the special man in my life - my DH (OK so if I was the Queen Bee, they said,  then he was the Drone).

with drone
This was in - New York - that year (2003) the conference was in the same week as our 30th wedding anniversary. In fact we celebrated the actual day at the Harlequin Party.  And at the eHarlequin Breakfast I was chatting with my editor of the time when I heard my name called.

dreamHostie Dream was standing on a chair, announcing the  Queen Bee's anniversary. All the Gonnabeez had contributed to a wonderful gift - an album made up of individual pages from each of them, with photographs and messages. OK, I'm going to admit it - this was such a  special moment that  it made me cry   . . . another treasure, another very very  special memory.  I have made so many special friends on the boards  since I first visited in  January 2001 (I remember that because it was just when my book Rafael's Love-Child was published)

KSAnd T ? Well T is for Total  - the very special moment last year when I celebrated reaching  my ‘Golden' book - my 50th Harlequin title. In June 2007 The Sicilian's Red-Hot Revenge was published and I got to celebrate with a real party  and a cyber party - a Great Big Blog Party where so many of my Harlequin friends came to join in, in person or by blog post. And then in London that September  Mills & Boon's Editorial Director Karin Stoecker presented me with my golden pin - just  in time for me to wear  it proudly at all the special events for Mills & Boon's 100th birthday.

This is only a tiny snapshot of the wonderful Harlequin Moments that writing romance has brought me - I could have written about so many many more -  but I wanted to share with some of the very special moments that have all added together to make my personal Harlequin MOMENT.

And so many of you - authors, readers, would-be authors  . . . have been part of my Harlequin  moments - thank you all for the very important contribution you have made to my time on these boards. I may never meet many of you but you're all a very special part of  my  Harlequin life.

So what about you? Have you been lucky enough to meet a friend in person you've met through the Harlequin Community? Has your reading of Harlequin  romances brought someone special into your life - some one you can't imagine being without? I'd love to know.

About The Author:

Kate is often asked if she's a romantic person because she writes romances. Her answer is that if being romantic means caring about other people enough to make that extra special effort for them, then, yes, she is.

Romance is about making the important people in your life feel valued and letting them know that you care. But she also writes about relationships and the difficulties people sometimes have in understanding each other, or expressing their feelings, or overcoming problems.

Sometimes, when the right words won't come, or an idea hasn't worked out as she thought, she wonders why she doesn't have a regular nine-to-five job — but only sometimes. When the story's flowing and the characters come alive, she really can't imagine doing anything else. And there's a tremendous satisfaction in knowing that she's doing what she always dreamed of and proving wrong all those people who said she would never make a successful career out of her writing.

I always wondered why you

I always wondered why you were called Queen Kate.  I had assumed it was because you are English and had a Queen.Embarassed

Oh you made me cry!

I knew about the Queen Bee thing from last year's RWA when Trish and the others "Bees" at the party explained it.

All these Blogs this month have been neat and some have misted me up, but this one got the tears going. Congrats on so many years and books!

Dear Kate,

Your moment about your mom made me cry. So many of us have carried our dream to be published from childhood. Stands to reason that so many of us share extra special memories of sharing our journeys with our parents. Thanks very much for sharing your memory with us.

You asked about friendships that started online and spilled into real life. I have a reverse experience. At the PJ party in San Fran, I met a delightful woman named Kate. (Didn't know at the time she was a queen. I might have been more respectful...Innocent)

We spent a snappy few minutes trading grammar jokes and adjectival quips. We also conspired to mock Holly Jacobs (in a loving way, of course). Clearly this Kate and I had much in common.

Since returning from RWA, I've run into Kate online several times and it's always been fun. I'm looking forward to seeing her again in person. So for me, the connection went real-life to online, but it's a connection I'm happy to have made nonetheless.

Cheers,

Ellen "Testy" Hartman

P.S. I met Susan Gable when I bought her in an online auction for a romance author who needed help with medical bills. Now that I know Susan in real life, I must say that original purchase was $50 well spent. Wink

What a question!

Have you been lucky enough to meet a friend in person you've met through the Harlequin Community?

What a question!  Your hug of greeting on our meeting is one of MY moments.  And seeing you get your pin made me cry.  Then there was all the Mouse and Pen girls...and Michelle...and spending an afternoon with Trish...

I still maintain I wouldn't be where I am without the boards here - for both information and friendships made.

Hi!

I made it - sorry I'm a bit late - of course my moment had to go up while I was away from home. I just had a wonderful visit with my friend Michelle Reid - and we  were getting together because Anne McAllister has flown in from  America to visit too.

So you see - there's one part of my answer to my own question - these wonderful friends I've met and kept because of, amongst other things, eHarlequin

And now here are some more of you that I can call my friends because we've chatted so often on here - and I've been lucky enough to meet some of you too.

So now I'll answer some of the responses - thank you all so much for dropping by.

And - now I think of it, if you're in America, it's  not so late, really!

Hi Frenchie

I wondered if I'd see you here - thanks for commenting. I'd miss you if you weren't here.

Yes, I thought I'd better explain the Queen Kate thing - it's not just cos I'm English. And some people think it's because I explain things on here - but the Queen Bee thing is where it all started. I still have my tiara and my sceptre - and a bee brooch and a bee pendant that some of the Gonnabeez gave me. I treasure them still even though the GBs are now disbanded.Cry

Oh Penn . . .

I didn't mean to make you cry - but I'm honoured that you did. I had a hard time writing a post for my Harlequin Moment - because there were so many special ones -so I had to try and keep the the really lovely ones. I have so many great memories to look back on since I started writing for Harlequin  - and specially since I stared coming on the Community message boards.  And I hope to keep making a lot more.

I love the way that this community helps me connect with readers who are thousands of miles away in person but not in their hearts

Oh Testy! - I mean Ellen - you reduced me to tears with your sweet post. I had so much fun meeting you too - it was fabulous the way we just clicked straight into become overly adjectival togther. And teasing Holly didn't harm too . I do hope that won't be the only time we can get together in person.   And in the meantime we can still tease and  - er adjectivise - here on eHarl.

Thanks for your comments about my Mother  - It was so special to be able to tell her of my success to her face and see her beaming smile - and the way she kept telling anyone who would listen . . . but then sad when the bok came and she didn't see that. But I know she knew/knows and that's what counts

Did you really buy Susan G for $50??? That was a great bargain

Oh and don't forget - you were going to send me a couple of books for my Christmas Contest - yes?

Hope we get to meet up again and then maybe we can be sappy together Wink

 Hugs

Hi Nancy

Haven't these Harlequin Moments been great? It's been really special to be part of it.  I get so cross when people put romances down -  and one of the reasons is because of the great warmth and sharing that  there is in the community, both here on eHarl and all over the world.

And thank you for paying me such a very special comment about my writing - it meant such a lot to me. I'm having a pretty special week - visiting with my friends,  discovering that Romantic Times has given my latest (November) book 4.5 stars and a Top Pick - and now the Harlequin Moment.  That's what romance writing and sharing is all about.

Sweetheart, I'm right there with you - meeting you at AMBA last year was one of those - another  of those - very special moments. I missed you this year.

And having you there when I got my 50th pin made that extra special too - I'm so glad you made it to that special day.

The wonderful thing about 'meeting' people on these boards is that then when we do meet in person we are already friends.

So I want to take an extra moment to say thank you to Jayne and all the  hosties and everyone who helps us all to maintain these special connections.

A thought . . .

I'm having a very special - and lovely week so because I just heard the sad news I'd like to take a moment to remember a special person.

I was so sad to hear that Paul Newman had died. While not unexpected, it was a sorrow to learn he was no longer in this world.

My sympathy goes out to his wife and his family.
He always made me smile - and cheer - when I thought of how he said, with regard to his marriage to  Joanne Woodward - "I have steak at home, so why should I want to go out for a hamburger."

That's romantic. Rest in Peace Paul Newman. You'll be missed.

How much would you pay for Susan Gable?

Hi Kate,

It's possible I bought Susan for $45 but that sounded kind of, I don't know? Cheap? So I rounded up. Wink

I have books for your Christmas stocking on my desk at work. One of my life challenges, however, is that I'm extremely lazy. I carried the books to work but had to take a few days rest before I could muster the energy to carry them on to the post office. They're coming, though. I promise.

I enjoyed reading the comments on your post--both entertaining and warm--excellent adjectives.

Fondly yours,

You know I'm feeling just a bit sorry for Susan at this moment.  LOL

I agree about Paul Newman, Kate.  He was a gentleman, but always with a twinkle in his eye, you know?  A wonderful human being.

Hi Donna--I wrote that heading about Susan because I was bored and thought maybe I could entice her out to play. Hmm, I seem to have snared you instead with my bait--I'm okay with that! Smile

How much would I pay for Susan Gable? There is no limit--even if I'd have to mug one of Kate's Tycoons to raise the funds. Wink

I LOL'd on how they got you to do this Blog Bash. Good job girls, corner the authors when they are dead tired! Hehehehe

It always amazes me how much Harlequin is like a family. I've been blessed to have met some of the friends I have made here. I actually spent the night at Dee's house and her dh made us a wonderful breakfast. This was before the twins. Then this past summer, I went to the RT in Pittsburgh and met many more. Rae, Lorie, Kate Bridges, Maria V. Snyder, just to name a few.

Harlequin and this community saved my sanity and I am thankful everyday that I took the leap and joined.

A Harlequin Moment today...one of many!

HI everyone, just a drive by post to say hi to the Queen and give her a BIG bear hug!  I spent the day at the Harlequin tent at our annual Toronto Word on the STreet book festival, and it was such a pleasure to see the happy faces of all the fans as they browsed the offerings we had for them.  There's nothing like a romance book to make someone smile and share a story...and I heard and SAW some Harlequin moments today that will make me smile for a long time Laughing  One of which was provided by my own sweet 14 yr old daughter who was running the games table for the little ones.  She was approached by an adult who asked her about what kind of books we had for sale (proceeds were for literacy) and she launched into marketing mode..."well ma'am we truly have something for everyone...." she said and took her right to a table and told her about Love Inspired Suspense (her favorites) and then about Romantic Suspense and suggested that the lady would perhaps like some Historical Romances ...she made her mama proud Laughing

And guess what Kate?  She actually has 9 chapters of a book under her belt (her very own secret summer project)!!!

The problem is that this blog and one of the busiest weekends in the year (er . . well - a very  busy weekend in a very very busy year - who knows what's  coming next?)  and I didn't get a moment yesterday to call in and respond.

But I'm here now!

Hi Sadhbh - thanks for dropping by. I'm glad you enjoyed the moment(s)

Dear Sappy Testy

(Can one be sappy and testy?) I'm sure of all the adjectives we could come up with, cheap would never apply to you  - or Susan. Wink

I'm delighted to know that some books will be heading 'over the pond' for the Christmas stocking contest - though I have to admit that just thinking about Christmas already makes me come over all wobbly.Surprised  I'm glad to know that simply being lazy is the only reason - other than being forgetful, mean, reluctant or  other adjectives that would concer me far more.    I'm really looking forward to seeing your books - do you know if they have been published over this side of the pond yet?  I shall certainly keep any eye out for them - thus making myself watchful and observant - and probably anticipatory too.

This adjective thing can get out of hand.

 Warmly - and other adjectiuves

Donna . . . .

I wouldn't worry about Susan, I reckon she could definitely hold her own - and  being 'bought' in the way Ellen means sounds like quite a bit of fun too.

I'm definitely up for hugs in  DC if I can make it - that's the plan. But - er  - next summer looks even busier than this one , if possible. Surprised RNA, RWA and teaching in Wales . . . Surprised

Haven't there been some great tributes to Paul Newman - a fine man as well as a fine actor. And the  photographs that have appeared remind  you of just how handsome a man he was in his youth - not that those looks really faded in  old age.

Sending a bear hug right back

. .  to the Wonderful Jayne! It was so good to see you in SF - I've missed the Harlequin PJ Party the past couple of years.

The Word on the Street Festival sounds like a lot of fun - I wish I could have been there., And your daughter sounds like a real sweetheart - just like her Mum.

How great that she has written that much of a book - I know grownup writers who say they're going to write and never get past chapter 3! I do hope she finishes it. What sort of story is it? Tell her congratulations from me. I was writing my own stories at the same age, though  everyone said it would never come to anything . . . I just wish I could meet some of the ones who did now.  It would be wonderful if she had a future as a writer.

Sending more hugs your way
