- OK, calmed down now and thinking about books!03/16/2008 - 15:18
Yes, I'd like all of the Betty Neels books if they're still up for grabs. I'm actually in California now. Don't know if that will affect postage price or not. Let me know how much you want for them and postage. You can e-mail me directly at Missin Texas at att dot net (running the first two words together and substituting the appropriate symbols for words). Thanks for holding onto them for so long.

and hasn't let go yet. I'll get back to you later tonight. Right now I need to calm down because I just exploded at the Sears repair manager. Washing machine (which is upstairs) just flooded the laundry room & downstairs for the 3rd time and he tells me it's going to take nine days to get someone out here!

I was at the gym and set it on a piece of weight equipment thinking it was out of the way, went to do the exercise, and felt a crunch.

It wasn't as out of the way of the pivot arm of the machine as I thought. Ruined the screen even through the hard case. Palm was pretty quick with the repair, but I was completely lost without it.
OK, so here's a question, if you all read e-books, where do you get them and do you have trouble finding what you're looking for? DH and I read a lot of Christian fiction. Other than the Steeple Hill e-boooks here I didn't find any in my browsing yesterday.

and now I'm going to have to add it to my favorites. DH is interested in getting a Kindle, but we both have PalmTX's so it doesn't make sense to me to get another device. Personaly, I love my TX and just got a subscription to Audible to be able to listen to books on it while I'm at the gym. My world came to a screeching halt this summer when I had to send it in to have the screen repaired because I use it for my calendar, my GPS, gym music, keeping track of my TBR, grocery lists, workout spreadsheet...everything. When we move again I'll get a Palm smart phone so I don't have to drag keys, phone, and PDA around the gym with me.

you and DH go out for an hour without kids and go to the library instead of some place romantic. He suggested, while we were both busily writing down titles of new TBR books in our PDA's, that I get a degree in library sciences so I can be a librarian when we retire and have ready access to all the books our hearts desire.
Glad I found this thread. Love the idea of the CtA!

You have enough going on without keeping track of all our reading, but thanks heaps for doing it.

I guess I wasn't so much outraged as surprised that I had to pay for my audio book but not for my daughters'. It also surprised me because the library district I patronize is in a high-income/high-tax bracket area, so I assumed they would have more services available at less cost than the major metropolitan area that surrounds us. (that sounds snobby, but you have to see the geographical income distribution around here to understand--it's very odd and I'm not sure I could explain it well)
All that said, I try to do what I can for the library because the folks that work there are fabulous. For example, they have a deal with Amazon that if you buy books from Amazon via the link on the library's web page then the library gets a cut of that sale. I've passed it on to our homeschool group on base to encourage people to use that link and I know they've passed it on to other homeschool groups.
Penn - thanks for the tip about Audible special offers. I'll be sure to ask when I call them.

and so far I like it. Penn got me started on the idea the other day. I, too, would much rather hold the paper book in my hand. Only problem for me is that I often like to read really detailed, really long historical nonfiction, but the only time I actually have to devote to them is right before bed. Unfortunately at that time of night I'm so worn out that I read the same paragraph 4, 5, or 6 times trying to absorb the details. I convinced DH that I should try e-books for the historical stuff so that I can take them to the gym with me and listen there while I'm working out. On Saturday I was able to get a couple of chapters into a book on the American Revolution that would have taken me weeks to actually read. What's more I actually remember what I heard!
As long as I'm takin' the PDA to the gym to keep a workout record on, I might as well listen to e-books on it too.

who thought it was a little outrageous to have to pay for an audio book at a free library. If anything I would figure we'd have to pay for the kids' audio, not the adult, since kids tend to be harder on those kinds of things than adults and the audio would have to be replaced more often. And, yes, there is a similar fee for videos. They also charge a rental fee on the very hottest books for about the first 6 weeks after they're published. In spite of that, I do think we have a really great library system here (interlibrary loans and huge catalog) and the librarians are incredibly helpful.
On a similar note...came across an Audible ad on a web page I was perusing yesterday for 14-day free trial and one free credit, so I took 'em up on the offer. Had a good time at the gym with my new audio book today. Thanks for the inspiration, Penn!
I've nearly got DH convinced that we need to continue the membership after the 14-day trial is up.
