i was recently at a RWA panel presentation and someone said that in order for a book to be considered a romance it needed to have a happily ever after ending, not necessarily marriage, but the possibility of the two characters spending their lives togehter.

the other side of this is a novel with romantic elements which would show the developing story between the two characters, but not necessarily end in a fulfilling-happily-ever-after sort of way.

    i hope that helps.

i will do a full review as soon as i finish reading it!

i am savoring every word though -- between the great descriptions of my homestate and getting to live out my rock n roll fantasy...why would i want it to end? lol!

i don't think that makes you a shallow reader at all.  we read for pleasure and if it's not a pleasurable experience...then why do it?  i could see myself feeling the same way.  i might even consider writing to the publisher and telling them my qualms.

on the other hand, i have definitely read books just because they were brand new and i loved the crisp pages and the smell of the binding brought me back to all those "first days of school" when the future was unknown, but anticipated to be exciting.

Jill, what a wonderful, inspiring story.  thank you so much for sharing it!  i will keep you and your husband in my prayers.  it must have been a terrifying, heart wrenching time, but how wonderful that you had your love to sustain you!

your wedding pictures are beautiful!  i had wanted an intimate wedding, but ...  my big italian family was too big for that.

i believe in love because i saw my parents go through some really tough times, not unsimilar to yours, although as far as the health issues, that didn't come until they were older.  my dad was a tough guy and like many men of his generation, he really didn't get that involved in his family and never seemed very nurturing.  but he nursed my mom, changed her dressings and was devoted to her through a mastectomy and a colostomy.  my parents are retired now and they spend most of their time together.  they run errands together.  they sit and read or watch tv together.  they both come to babysit my kids together.

my husband and i have been married for 11 years. we have had our trials.  and as time goes on, i realize all of those trials have shown us what we are made of--what our love is made of--and i know we can handle a lot as long as we are together!

i love manhattan!  i hope you have a great time. i hear jersey boys is wonderful!

i loved your story about the football team and breastfeeding!

makes my own "breastfeeding class" story seem not nearly as humiliating as it felt at the time.  i took the class at the hospital before my oldest daughter was born.  i am very petite (4'11" and normally right around 100 lbs) but apparently when i was pregnant the breastfeeding coach decided i was "full figured" and used me as a model in front of mothers and fathers!!  to simulate breastfeeding a doll!

it's kind of interesting to me that no one has mentioned physical attributes.  i'm kind of thinking that if you asked this question of men, you would get more physical comments.

but i do have to say, a sense of humor is incredibly sexy.

    my top three would be:

    sense of humor

    attentive listener

    motivated

lucky for my, my husband has all three of those ;-)

i love the idea of "geek dating".  actually, i love the idea of time spent with dh shopping considered a date.

we tend to be really practical.  i guess owning a home, having two kids and being a sahm in today's economy, ya kinda have to be pretty practical.  we both love to cook and spend many weekend afternoons whipping up fanastic culinary creations together, often sharing a bottle of wine!  hey, i guess i can consider those times dates!  wow!  the romance is still blooming in my life!!

we are currently "finishing" our basement.  we have spent many afternoons at home depot or lowe's picking out lights, bathroom fixtures, windows, carpeting, etc.

when we were dating, we would have considered shopping a date...so why not consider our forays to home depot a date?

sometimes we even stop at panera or baja fresh for a bite to eat.  once we even went to a place for a cocktail...

i guess we have been dating!

i feel so much cooler now that i know i have been "geek dating" because prior to that, i thought i had not had a date in, well, years!!

woo hoo!  thanks for posting, hollySmile

i love contemporary novels.  i need to be able to relate to the hero and heroine and imagine myself hanging out with them.  i enjoy exploring their lives, their feelings and what makes them love one another.

i really like how contemporary authors are starting to test the limits and be even more true to contemporary life, with heroines and heroes who have friends or family that are dealing with a variety of issues.

my favorite writers are: brenda novak, christine rimmer, paula detmer riggs, anna destefano, and janice macdonald.

i also love barbara delinsky, luanne rice and kristin hannah.
