- What Julie said. I think09/04/2008 - 11:11
What Julie said.
I think I'd hear from my readers if I didn't do a love scene. That said, I wrote an Intrigue that was a LOT hotter than I usually write, and I got emails letting me know it was too hot. LOL.
Julie, that was a clever idea to put the love scene on your website.
As for backstory, Suzanne, I think Julie nailed it again. Try to include enough to engage the reader. Not always easy, I know. It's always tough to balance everything in an Intrigue.

Louisiana Lady, YAY on the internet. I hope you get power back soon.
About a week after Katrina, we didn't have much of a house left, no electricity, no phone, but when I turned on my laptop, it searched for the internet and somehow found a signal. I couldn't believe it.
HUGS on the trees. It's so tough to lose them, especially if they're a big part of your landscape.

<< it's the tone of the story that makes it an Intrigue--different authors get that Intrigue "feel" in different ways >>
Well said, Julie!!!

Suzanne, Mallory is right--three days is the norm for the time frame for many Intrigues. Sometimes, I'll have a prologue that will start the story at one point, but the actual action in the chapters will take place over 3-4 days.
You're doing great so keep it up!

LOL, Julie. I love your son's questions!! My daughter called from Wal-mart and asked--where do you buy the little toilet thingy that goes on top? It took me several more questions to realize she was talking about a toilet lid cover and not the actual seat or tank lid.
Suzanne, keep that champagne chilled, and when the writing gets tough, just think of how great it'll taste when you get the call you want to celebrate.
Congrats on your ebook sales as well! I'm glad you found a home for the Bombshells.

Suzanne, you'll join Julie and me as Moms with Kids in College. It's a great time, and I'm sending good wishes for your son.
Yep, the double sale was exciting. They came six days apart, and I was still on cloud nine from the first call when the second one came.

Suzanne, I CHEERED when my day job ended.
My husband was in the military, and we were reassigned. I wasn't certified to teach in the state where we were moving, so I thought--here's my chance to quit. Ha! I'd just sold to Dorchester and Harlequin so the timing was perfect.
Sometimes, I think kids are more work when they're 18 than when they're younger. They're more expensive too.

Suzanne, I gave up my day job a few years ago. YAY! But I wrote my first 5 or 6 books while working full time, and I have four kids, including an autistic son. I used to grab writing time whenever I could. I would keep my alphasmart on the kitchen counter while I was cooking dinner and would write in the classroom (I taught special ed) when my kiddos were at PE and music.
You're right--I do have more time to write these days. Thank goodness! I keep to a schedule and write 4-6 hours a day, five days a week. Some books just come together, and others take a little longer.
As for chapters, I often have several 10 page chapters in a book, and I usually change the POV with each chapter. Sometimes though, I keep the same POV and still have a chapter break. It all depends on the story.
Best of luck!

Hope, good luck with your writing over the long weekend. Fingers crossed that you turn out lots of pages!

Suzanne, I think I'm a fairly fast writer. I usually take about 3-4 weeks to write an Intrigue, but there are Intrigue authors who are a lot faster than I am.
