Healing Tides by Lois Richer is the first one in the series "Pennies from Heaven". I don't know how the series got it's name, but it seems to be about people who are asked by one Elizabeth Wisdom to go to different places and work for her in various capacities, like doctors in a foreign clinic, etc.
Glory Ann was one such person. She had been asked by Elizabeth to go to Hawaii and work at a hospital for burned children. That's where she met Jared. He was head of the hospital, and had perfected a certain technique that helped save many lives when they would have otherwise died from their burns.
So why wouldn't he use this technique any more? What was in his past that caused him such agony that he didn't seem to care about anything any more? What does Glory Ann have to do to get him to see that he is not alone in his suffering? And what about her background?
Lois outdid herself with this book. My heart broke over the agonies of the children suffering from burns -- all too real. And yet through it all, a thread of humor.
