#57: His Brother's Gift, by Mary J. Forbes SSE July 2007

Score: 3.5

This was a nice book.  Will is a bush pilot in Alaska.  HIs brother and sister-in-law die in a plane crash and Savanna, his sister-in-laws best friend, brings his nephew, Christopher, to him as guardian. After his initial recoil from the idea of instant parenthood, Will embraces the idea of having one final family member in his life.  Christopher has Asperger's Syndrome, a form of autism, and Will is at a loss for how to deal with him and his special needs.  Savanna, who cared for Christopher alot when he was still with his parents, stays to help ease the transition of the boy and his uncle.

I thought the portrayal of an autistic boy was very believable and added an interesting depth to the story.  I also loved Georgia, Christopher's great grandmother on his mom's side.  She was a lovely support character and I could envision Will, Savanna, Christopher and Georgia all becoming a mutually supportive family.
