#81 High Noon by Nora Roberts, Jove 2007

Phoebe MacNamara learned at age 12 what it took to be a hostage negotiator.

She learned to be a listener.  Her mother’s boyfriend, Reuben, had them held at gunpoint and she listened to what the man outside was saying to Reuben. He was distracting him and keeping him talking.  She saw he was working himself up again and distracted him by offering to fix him some food.  She found a way to get her brother Carter out of the house. She helped save her family and continued to do than thru college, thru the FBI training, thru marriage and divorce and currently at their home in Savannah as the local hostage negotiator in the crisis unit.

When she is called out to talk down a jumper on St Patrick’s Day, she meets the owner of the bar and the building, Duncan Swift.  She successfully talks Joe into surrendering and Duncan is completely taken with this confident, take charge woman.  He pursues her and gets her to agree to meet him for a drink at one of his bars.  There she learns he was a lottery winner 7 years ago and he learns she is divorced with a seven year old daughter.

He is totally attracted to her and keeps up the pursuit especially after she is attacked brutally in her own police station and keeps going. Phoebe locates the culprit who attacked her and believes that he is responsible for other incidents that occurring at her home.  Duncan stands by her thru it all, not repulsed by her life and the dark side she must deal with, but seeing the good she does and the lives she saves.

I truly enjoyed reading this book.  Phoebe had a flavor of Eve Dallas and her cop shop, but with the understanding of shopping and children and everyday acceptance of life that Eve missed out on.  Duncan had a flavor of Roarke, but a relaxed everyday kind of guy, not the mogul controlling things Roarke has.  I highly recommend this book. It was a thoroughly enjoyable read.

Hi Jayejean--I just purchased this book and am looking forward to reading it soon. Thanks for the good review.

This is the book that I'm currently reading. Funny, I'm feeling the same way about the characters--Phoebe/Eve, Duncan/Roarke--only a little on the lighter side. But I really like Eve & Roarke so that doesn't bother me in the least.

Too funny. I thought the same thing!

I'm reading Tribute right now and loving it.

Hi guys

Mary - I just know you will enjoy it.

Shannon / Tracey - funny how she has been doing this so long some of he characters take on some of the same characteristics.  They are definately on the lighter side - not the sharp angles and harsh realities of Eve and Roarke but I like these characters very much also.

Hi Jeannie

I really liked this one. I didn't see Roarke but Phoebe did remind me a bit of Eve. Duncan was so likable. I think this is one of Nora's better more recent single titles.

Margie :)

Hi Margie

I saw Roarke as the Millionaire, as the man who supported his cop wife/girlfriend no matter what happened, who insisted on being present to hold her and back her up.  Duncan did all this and generally accepted her family as they were with humor and acceptance and love.  Roarke was there only a different more working man type of Roarke.

Hey Jeannie

I actually forgot that Duncan was so rich. You have reminded me about that. Now I will have to think about the Duncan/Roarke connection. I did blog this last year when I read it but I don't remember if I commented on him being similar to Roarke when it was fresher in my mind. Wish we could access our old blog. Like I said, this book was one that was higher on her single title list for me. I read it when it came out in hardcover from the library so I don't own it. I'll have to get a paperback version.

Hi Margie

LOL  I type them out in a Word document and copy and paste them in here so I have all of mine from last year.  Not to say they are exactly the same.  I edit them and adjust them until I think I got it right.

I thought the same thing when I read this that it was along the lines of the In Death books. That made it more to my liking as I love the Eve and Roarke books.

I totally agree

I totally agree Deb.... the similarities made me want more.
