#86 Angel of Mercy by Toni Andrews, Mira 2008

Mercy Hollings is still working on getting her hypnotherapy business off the ground.  Sukey is her Office Manager and she still has Cupcake, the rotweiller formerly known as Cujo that she got when she rescued Sukie from the now dearly departed psycho killer Dominic.  Mercy carefully discusses what the client really wants and needs before she administers her ‘push’ – the mental command for that person to obey.  When she tells you to do something with the push, you do it.

She still has misgivings about some of the decisions she has made, but she is working with them.  Sukey has volunteered to help her locate her birth parents and has been reading a manual on how to become a PI and it seems to be working. One of Mercy’s clients wants to learn how to stop making mistakes and in questioning her very carefully and noticing the bruises on her throat, she becomes aware this woman is being abused.  She contacts Hilda and brings the client over there to hide her until she can figure out what to do. Hilda remembers having the card of a woman who runs a safe house for abused women and Mercy ends up calling Rose and bringing her client over there. Rose tells Mercy to back off and she will take it from there, but Rose shows up at Mercy’s office to take the cure to stop smoking and broaches the subject of Mercy volunteering at the shelter.  Mercy is uncertain at first but after going over and meeting some of the women she knows she can help them with self esteem issues and it feels like the right thing to do.

Throughout the book each chapter starts with a child writing a short letter to the Angel of Mercy so you know there will be something relating to one of the children at the shelter coming up.  Needless to say Mercy gets in over her head and needs to back away.  She and Sukey are still pursuing information on her birth parents.  The story is left open ended so there very well could be another Mercy book in the future.

Enjoyed..

I enjoyed this one a lot more than the first one.  The first one was sort of iffy for me if I would continue the series but I really liked this one.
