Bayou Midnight by Emilie Richards... QC #250

Bayou Midnight by Emilie Richards, Men Made in America (Louisiana) (Originally SIM, May 1987)

book coverDetective Sergeant Sam Long is investigating a case. The latest crime has been a fire which looks like arson. The building was believed to be empty but what the arsonist didn't know was that one of the executives had a fight with his wife and was sleeping in his office. So the arson case was now a murder case. There was also a 7 year old girl asleep on one of the sofas (she was the cleaning lady's daughter) When she heard the explosion she woke up screaming and it was very smoky. The next thing she remembers is sitting outside on a sidewalk. Sam figures the arsonist carried her out but she suppressed the memory. He goes to see psychologist Antoinette Deveraux about hypnotising the child, even though he is against the idea it may be his only lead in the case.

This story did not hold my interest at all. I kept finding other things to do to avoid reading it. I even put it aside and read two other books. And I can't understand why, I should have liked it. There was honesty between the h and H. But I couldn't figure out what they were doing. They were saying one thing but doing another. There was suspense in the story. But the story sort of dragged. She was always playing psychologist. The story got bogged down with a lot of details. I must say though I really liked the last chapter that was when all the action happened.

Maybe the story is too dated .....

it's from 1987 ... so that's 20 years

that's too bad you got stuck with a tough one .... sounds like you got at least a bit of enjoyment with that last chapter
