When criminalist Lincoln Rhyme's cousin Arthur is arrested for murder, Arthur's wife Judy comes to LIncoln for help and he reluctantly agrees to help. As Lincoln investigates with the help of his partner, police officer Amelia Sachs, he finds other cases similar to his cousin's. In each case, police received an anonymous tip which led them to a defendant who had evidence in his house which matched evidence at the crime scene. Lincoln and Amelia are drawn into the world of data mining as they try to find out how the perpetrator knew enough about people to frame them for the crimes. They fnd themselves up agains a clever criminal who is skilled at finding out everything there is to know about people and who will use that knowledge to stop them no matter what it takes.
