This is the fifth book in the In Death series. I liked the first couple and now they seem to be getting routine.
Eve
Dallas is called in by the Chief to investigate a dead policeman, also
Feeny's old partner. It seems the dead man may have been involved in
dealing narcotics.
While investigating this she's contacted by the
deceases granddaughter who has connections to a cult. Eve delves into
the world of black and white magic.
And it all turns personal when a dead body shows up on the doorstep of the house where Eve and her husband Roarke reside.
I
wasn't completely thrilled with the way Wicca was treated in this book.
In the typical way it was misunderstood. But there are books for
understanding the practice out there, so I won't explain.
Roarke turns out to be superstitious. He had Eve's wedding ring engraved with a Celtic symbol of protection.
As
usual there is lots of sex, some violence and in the end Eve ends up
with in a tight situation where Roarke has to save her and they both
walk away in the end all lovey-dovey. I'd think Roarke would be a
little upset that she goes off on her own and nearly gets herself
killed. Time and again.
All in all an okay book. It did seem like a
bit of a filler in the series. None of the over-arching plots moved
forward much. All the mainstay characters are here- Mavis, Peabody,
Feeny, Whitney.
