Like a Charm by Candace Havens (Berkley Trade February 2008)

Abracadabra
Format: eBook
Series: Other

This book is the first one I have read by Candace Havens. I heard wonderful things about her books and couldn't resist Like a Charm. I am so glad I read it.

Blurb from Candace Havens website:

Kira Smythe never thought she'd end up back in her hometown of Sweet, Texas. But now that her high-powered job, along with her five-year plan, have gone right out the window, she's back where she started, staying with her hippie, tofu-obsessed parents-except that somehow she's inherited the local library. At least there's a gorgeous guy in town who seems quite smitten with her. So what if he's got a few secrets up his sleeve? After all, Kira's got her own secrets. Like the dead people who won't stop talking to her. Or the magical books on the shelves. Or the fact that someone who's very much alive seems determined to push her over to the other side.

My thoughts:

The book is written in first person, which usually is a turn off for me. However, in Like a Charm I couldn't imagine it being written in third person. First person works really well. I love the way I didn't feel like I was losing anything with the romance aspect of the story even though it is in first person.

Ms. Havens writes compelling characters. Kira's point-of-view is the one the story is written in. Kira goes through a lot of changes and has difficult decisions to make. Add in the fact that she starts hearing then seeing dead people and you get pure entertainment.

I also loved the other characters in the book. You can feel the chemistry between Kira and Caleb, the mysterious man who has an instant connection with Kira. Kira's parents are fabulously written along with the other people who live in the town of Sweet, Texas.

Ms. Havens created a story that I could lose myself in and make me want to move there. I haven't done the story justice, but I don't want to give too much away.

I can't wait to read more from Ms. Havens. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a fabulous read who doesn't mind a few dead people talking to the heroine. This book will go on my keeper shelf. A definite re-read.
