From Dead to Worse by Charlaine Harris ~~ Ace ~ May 2008 ~~ A Southern Vampire Mystery ~ Book #8

The tensions in the various factions of Weres and the jealousies between the Vampire states all come to a head in this installment of the Southern Vampire series.   Due to Sookie’s intervention, an all out pack war is averted when she uncovers that the two Were rivals are being setup for takeover by an outside pack.   With the tremendous losses from Hurricane Katrina and the explosion at the summit, the Louisiana Vampires are vulnerably low in numbers and must succumb to the take over by the King of Nevada.  Much to Sookie’s shock, her boyfriend Quinn had been coerced into betraying her vampire friends.    This leads to a lot of uncertainty in the supernatural community, and Sookie tries hard to take steps back from further involvement.    We see Sookie and Sam becoming close again, and Bill trying to earn his forgiveness.  Eric remembers his time with Sookie and because of the changes in the Vampire regime; he can’t act on his newfound memories.   Eric does introduce Sookie to a faerie prince who claims to be her great-grandfather.   There’s a nice twist to the ending of this book that sets up future installments.

This catches me up on the Sookie series.  What a treat these books have been and I’m very much looking forward to future books.   I’m surprised how fun I’ve found the stories, and how compelled I was to read the next book.   This last installment wraps up some plot lines introduced in the previous books, and makes me wonder if perhaps more books are not truly in the works.  However, I’m hoping that the lovely little teaser twist at the end of the book is an indication that my fears are unwarranted.  This is a fun series; a great way to be introduced to the paranormal genre and one that any reader will find compelling because of the rich development of the main characters.  I’m hooked!
