Ally Rogers was a celebrity designer in Los Angeles where she has a thriving business. Her mother live in Chicago and the two have a rocky relationship that has become a chilly, formal civility. Ally traveled a lot in her business.
Dr. Jake Fox is a headstrong psychiatrist who had befriended a group of senior citizens one of which is Estelle - Ally's mother. Jake was not a tactful person.
Jake had called Ally and when he couldn't reach her on the phone he left a message telling her who he was and that he needed to talk to her immediately about her mother. When Ally called him he told her that there was a "situation" with her mother and she needed to "get to Chicago immediately and deal with it". Ally and her mother Estelle had not really gotten along in years and while she wanted to help her mother she knew it could take someone else to to talk her into getting help. Ally knew she was going to have to get Jake's help even though she did not like him. Ally thought Jake was a bossy, manipulative person and she had had enough of that type in her life. Ally and Jake developed feelings for each other and he had helped with her mother but she did not want his type in her life again.
I enjoyed the book even though at times I wanted to shake both Ally and Jake and tell them to wise up.
