Enchanted Afternoon by Susan Wiggs

She had it all.....Beautiful, charming and respected as the wife of an ambitious senator, Helena Cabot Barnes is the leading lady of Saratoga Springs. But beneath the facade lies a terrible deception. Helena married for all the wrong reasons-and discovered too late that her husband is a dangerous man. Fearing for her safety, she ends her marriage and flees to Moon Lake Lodge,

But Helena can't outrun her past, and danger lies ahead. In desperation she turns to Michael  Rowan, a man she once loved, a man who broke her heart, a man in whom Helena has to put her trust again. But Michael has just discovered a shattering truth....and a reason to stay and fight for the woman he loves.

I didn't  much enjoy this book as I didn't like the characters in this book. Helena seemed too......I can't think of the word to use but she had the nerve to 'summon' a man who she hadn't seen for 9 years just to ask him to help her divorce her husband without  explaining the reasons why. Michael on  the other hand claimed to love Helena but didn't feel that love was enough for him so he left her. Only three quarters of the way through the  book he decides to win back Helena purely for another reason (a truth he discovers at their first meeting after their separation) If her love for him wasn't enough 9 years back then why is her love or his love for her enough now? It was a very confusing story as truths (or twists!) kept on being revealed that brought another dimension to the story.

There were good side characters in the story. Women who Helena helped to escape from husbands or owners who beat them. It was enlightening to see how women who suffered from grief (either through loss or any other reason) were treated (admitted to a mental asylum)

I usually enjoy Susan Wiggs stories but for some reason this  one didn't gel with me.
