Family Tree by Barbara Delinsky (Anchor Books, 2007)
This is a great story about giving birth, race, social standing and family secrets. From the back of the book: "Dana Clarke has just given birth to her first child. The little girl is lovely, but no one can help noticing how little she resembles her parents. Dana's husband, among others, suspects that she may have had an affair. In order to put the rumors and speculation to rest, Dana has to delve deep into her past and her husband's heritage to unearth some uncomfortable secrets. Can her marriage survive what she discovers?"
This really is an uncomfortable subject for many. For all those of us who claim to believe and are truly certain we do believe in equality amongst all races of people, how would we actually fare in a situation such as the one presented to Dana and her husband, Hugh? Their daughter has dark skin. How can this be if both Dana and Hugh and all their known relatives are white? The obvious conclusion is that Dana must have had an affair. But she is adamant that she did not. So what does this mean about all that they know to be true about their heritage? And does it really matter?
