Rosanna Redhill starts the book at 4 yrs old and fending off an attack by her drunk dad using any resource she could. She saves herself but at a cost to her peace of mind. We then jump to outside a burning café where Rosanna and a friend of hers are observing the commotion. In the commotion one of the responding officers, detective Bradford Walsh, glances over the crowd and spies Rosanna and feels interest flair to life inside of him. He looses track of her but ends up saving her life shortly thereafter in a bar that was engulfed in flames. Her friend, who had talked her into going out on the town, doesn’t get as lucky as Rosanna. Bradford is working on a string of suspicious fires and starts to feel that Rosanna may be targeted for some reason. When he goes to warn her about this she starts to try to talk to him about a possible link and possibilities but she sees the growing disbelief in his eyes and stops. His preconceived notions and a bad past experience won’t let him even entertain the idea that what she is saying may have some basis. After another unfortunate incident that threatens Rosanna’s life Bradford takes her to his house to safeguard her from any future attempts on her life. This, in the end, doesn’t solve anything and worked as a catalyst for the things that follow.
This was a good read. I know Bradford had a hard time entertaining the idea of something happening that wasn’t cut and dried but my small problem with the ending stems from his attitude throughout. While his attitude is very believable the ending seemed to be a bit abrupt so that I didn’t get to totally feel his acceptance of all of Rosanna. After what they went through that may have solidified things for Bradford but there wasn’t enough time spent showing it, just a few words. This is probably being very nit picky though. Like I said, it was a good book.
