Folly to be Wise by Sara Seale 1966/1971

This is the first book I read by Sara Seale in my teens (3 decades ago) and it is my favourite of hers.It is delightful.

Tessa and Jackie Lovaton were brought up on a farm near the moors and were very natural and carefree

In order  to discourage an unwanted suitor, the 18 year old   Tessa said she was pledged to another and, when pressed for his name,  chose the most unlikely man she could think of -"Stinky" Soames, the absent owner of the neighbouring estate.

However the fastidiously elegant Mr Max Soames returned  and after church greeted his "fiance" with a kiss and  continued the engagement  to Tessa's frustration. Not enarmoured by his nickname he requested after one of Tessa's lapses  ;

"Max-do you mind?"

This was a fun read with the interplay of Max and the artless two sisters delightful.  Laughing   Laughing  Laughing   Laughing   Laughing
