THE FORGERY OF VENUS by Michael Gruber

I’m a little sad that I’ve not loved his past books as much as his first two. I found VALLEY OF BONES and TROPIC OF NIGHT so compelling and emotional that I raved about them everywhere. This was more intriguing than some of the in between ones, but still not quite as magical for me. It’s a thriller that opens up with a lawyer narrating the tale of a friend of his, who might be mad, might be a forger, is definitely troubled, is obsessed with a drug, and is convinced that he’s peeking into the great artist Velasquez’s life enough to create new masterpieces. With stolen masterpieces, Nazi loot, bad guys galore, and the exploration of what is truth and why does it really matter, I enjoyed the story (though still loved the others!)  (MTH)
