Gracious Lady by Carole Mortimer (HP 1657)
Back Cover:
Testing the limits
Short of calling out the cavalry, Sophie could only do her best when it came to handling the enigmatic Maximilian Grant and his headstrong daughter. The catalog of disasters that had followed since she'd agreed to become the teenager's companion were as disturbing to her equilibrium as her new employer.
Under Maximilian's autocratic rule, Sophie and her past were subjected to enraging scrutiny. Moreover, she and the arrogant Mr. Grant alternated between being defiant adversaries and would-be lovers. Sophie knew there would be an explosive outcome - but would they emerge fighting ... or loving?
Spoiler Warning: All my reviews contain spoilers to some degree
Favourite Scene: (great slow burning kiss)
"Say that again," he rasped. "Say my name again! No one else has ever called me Maximilian. And I've so wanted you to."
"You've...?" She shook her head incredulously. "Maximilian, you can't - " She broke off abruptly as his head bent, his lips dangerously close to hers.
"Can't what?" he murmured huskily against her throat.
"Maximilian, you can't kiss me when - "
"But I'm not kissing you - yet," he added gruffly, his gaxe holding hers hotly. "NOW I'm kissing you." His mouth was warm against her mouth before his lips lowered to claim hers.
Another Fav Scene: (another kiss, ironic humour)
"Stop that!" She pushed away from him, her face flushed. "What do you think you're doing?"
"Kissing you," he shrugged. "And I think I must be doing it wrong, because there seems to be some confusion as to what I'm doing every time I DO kiss you!"
My Review:
The heroine comes to the hero's home to be a companion for his unruly daughter. The hero finds her a bad role model, given she's young and divorced (the marriage was a youthful mistake) and the hero met her before she turned up for her interview... on the streets after getting dumped out of the car by a boyfriend. Things get set straight and the hero and his daughter spend more time getting to know her. The H/h are attracted and fight it.
There's nice humour and sexual tension here. I think the heroine is written in a "befuddled damsel" way, which makes this look like a book from the 1980s (might bug some readers). I liked the book overall, I usually enjoy Carole Mortimer's books, she rarely touches my ick factors and writes sensual romance.
My Rating: 3.5/5 stars, an enjoyable story, great tension.
