Who would think an author could make the Black Death so interesting? John Kelly tells about the Black Death which traveled across Europe and Asia in 1347, leaving 23 million people dead. Called "a drama of courage, cowardice, misery, madness, and sacrifice that brilliantly illuminated humankind's darkest days when an old world ended and a new world was born." Of particular interest to us book lovers, Kelly suggests that it was the Black Death (and subsequent lack of labour) that gave rise to the invention of the printing press. I wasn't sure I would like this book because of the topic, but it was fascinating.
