HARD ROW by Margaret Maron [Other 30]

Format: Print Books
Series: Other

Judge Deborah Knott and Deputy Dwight Bryant have only been married a few months, and already they have a hard row to hoe.  Dwight's ex-wife was murdered, and now they have full custody of his son, Cal, who is having to adjust to his new life with them.  Their marriage and Deborah's huge extended family form the backdrop for the investigation of two deaths:  one an obvious, grisly murder, the other looking like a copycat killing.  As Dwight investigates and Deborah hears cases, their jobs overlap, while real life intrudes on their work and a killer may go free...

What I like about the Deborah Knott series is that Margaret Maron has taken the time to build characters that are so real, you feel as though you could drop in on them for a glass of sweet tea in the summer or maybe some hot chocolate in the winter. The murders are never just incidental to the characterization, but neither is it the other way around. The backgrounds are always rich with detail, but not bogged down. Her writing keeps getting better and better. No matter which Deborah Knott book you pick up, you'll end up either loving or hating the characters. They're just real people. I hope you end up liking them as much as I do.
