Pepper returns to her hometown to tell her relatives and friends there why she

 left in such a hurry about 13 years ago.  

It turns out she was pregnant but the father left the small town to make his 

mark in the world never looking back.  

Well meaning town busy bodies seek out the self admitting drifter to make him

 see the unknown to him consequences of his actions.

A good story but kind of hard to believe the boys would be that accepting of a 

guy who seemed to want nothing to do with them all those years.

  Also suspending disbelief a bit for the heroine to make it through med

 school with two small twins, but she may have spaced out some classes

 and just made it through hard work 

and determination.

In spite of those nits I did enjoy the book.
