High Noon by Nora Roberts (Jove June 2008)

book coverLoved this book! There are so many layers to the characters and the plot, it was wonderful to read.

Book Blurb: Police lieutenant Phoebe MacNamara found her calling at an early age, when a violently unstable man broke into her family's home, trapping and terrorizing them for hours. Now she's Savannah's top hostage negotiator, and she puts her life on the line every day to defuse powder-keg situations.

After watching her talk one of his employees off a roof ledge, Duncan Swift is committed to keeping this intriguing, take-charge woman in his life. Phoebe's used to working solo, but she's finding that no amount of negotiation can keep Duncan at arm's length. Especially when a man throws a hood over Phoebe's head and brutally assaults her-in her own precinct house-and threatening messages begin appearing on her doorstep. With Duncan backing her up every step of the way, she is determined to establish contact with the faceless tormentor who is intent on making her a hostage to fear-before she becomes the final showdown.

My Take: Duncan is such a sexy and easy hero to love. His instant and total attraction to Phoebe's admirable control and ability to take charge was easy to see. He's such a smart and confident man that he is in no way threatened by Phoebe's self-assurance. But he can't help his male instincts to want to protect her. He's charming but not calculating. Phoebe has to learn not to dissect every situation that she is in and just go with the flow, which she finds challenging. She likes to be in control of the situation. I enjoyed the repartee between them.

The threats to Phoebe extend to those she cares about and she is determined to find out who is behind it all. Someone wants to undermine her authority and make her pay. But can she get him in time?

Whomever wrote the blurb for this book was quite clever. I like making the link to the title (which becomes evident) as well as the cleverly chosen words in the blurb that mean more in retrospect than what they first appear.
