A man wakes up in a back alley with an ache in his head, blood coming from there, and no idea what had happened or where he was. After assessing things for a bit he noticed that a slip of paper directing him to St Paul’s chapel was stuck to his shoe. Not comprehending anything else he decided to see what or who was waiting for him at St. Paul’s. When he entered the church a lady beckoned him to follow, which he did as she seemed to recognize him and he needed some answers. The only problem being she was not going to give him any as it was a trap. A few burly men seized him from behind and a priest stepped in. The priest read the rites of baptism, using a name he assumed was his, and then he was forcefully dunked in the baptismal font a couple of times. After this bizarre event he was instructed that he would get a head start but then they would come after him with holy objects, which made no sense at all to him. He needed no more urging than the command to run to do just that and get away from this whole situation, whatever it was. In running from these people he almost gets hit by a car but instead ends up carjacking it, hopefully to safety. The young lady driving, Lucy Morgan, is a bit upset at this and while they were arguing the car gets totaled which means they both ended up walking. As they were close to Lucy’s abode they headed there where Lucy invited Truvin in and tried to feed him. After calling in the accident to the police, then hearing Truvin’s story, Lucy invites him to spend the night as he didn’t know where he lived, among other things. In trying to help Truvin Lucy becomes very involved very quickly, although that seemed to be a pattern with her. Truvin himself didn’t have many defenses against the draw he felt toward Lucy.
Very good story. This is book three of the ‘Bewitching the Dark’ series and the only one I have read. I think it would be a good idea to read the others first as I was learning things right along with the characters. If you read the previous books you would probably know some of the characters already and the change in Truvin would probably seem more dramatic than I felt it was. If, like me, this is your first in the series it is still a very good and interesting book. The revelations that come slowly to Truvin keep you totally invested in the mystery of him. Which, come to think of it, wouldn’t have been such a surprise if I had read the previous books I don’t think. Two ways then of looking at not reading the others in the series.
