Blurb: Hunted like an animal by Norman invaders, Bran ap Brychan, heir to the throne Elfael, has abandoned his father's kingdom and fled to the greenwood.
There, in the primeval forest of the Welsh borders, danger surrounds him--for this woodland is a living, breathing entity with mysterious powers and secrets, and Bran must find a way to make it his own if he is to survive.
I am in awe of this book. It is my best read of 2008 as of right now. Lawhead always writes such rich stories, you have to read slowly to enjoy all the layers, and no doubt when I reread this I'll find things I missed. Bran's growth in just this book is amazing. His plans to regain his kingdom are crafty and at times eerie. Merian and other familiar characters from the legend are here, each with a new twist. But my favorite part was how Lawhead brought the forest to life. It's practically it's own character, which really is only fitting for a Robin Hood story. I would dearly love to get my hands on Lawhead's research material. I can't wait to read Scarlet.
