The Host by Stephenie Meyer

(Little, Brown - 2008)

Rating: Excellent

This is one of those rare novels that feels completely perfect and self-contained, and leaves me in awe wondering if I'll ever been able to write anything as good as this book.

I'd read Meyer's Twilight a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it, but was waiting for the sequels to come out in paperback. When I heard that The Host was a standalone, I thought I'd give it a try.

I don't want to say much about the plot--I didn't read the cover blurb before buying it. Basically, the story takes place in a world in which human bodies are being taken over by aliens...though I promise for those who aren't fans of sci-fi, it's not technical or hokey at all.

Indeed, it's hard to define this book in terms of genre. Stephenie Meyer builds tension like very few other authors I know, but this isn't really a thriller...it's more about characters and their relationships. The character development and growth is fantastic, and the world-building is wonderful--this truly feels like something I haven't seen before. There's an interesting romance (or two) that had me rooting for the characters, though romance is not as much a focus in this novel as in Twilight.

If you're already a fan of Meyer's, definitely give this a try. You might also enjoy this if you're a fan of Sharon Shinn, Orson Scott Card, John Wyndham, or Anne McCaffrey...their novels all have a similar feel, to my mind.

Oh how good to know...

as this is one of the ones I hope to start in the next few days now that school is out!  Great review as always!!!

re: The Host

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!  Yay for school being out...I'm doing classes all summer (as a student, not a teacher) but my schedule is a little less crazy than before, so I'm finally getting some pleasure reading in...

I have this in

I have this in audio and am listening to it now. Very confusing at first but now am understanding it a bit better. I can send it to you Debi after I'm done if you'd like.

Can I borrow it first?

Pretty please??! I'll mail it to Debi myself!

Penn, back from up north (well, north-ish, not as north as Lady A)

Heyla Lady A.  I haven't

Heyla Lady A.  I haven't seen your phosphers in an age!

Deb....

I'd love to borrow it if I don't get to the print version soon but it will be awhile before I could listen to the audio so if Penn wants to borrow it, I can most definitely wait!

Finished...

this one the other day and oh, wow!  Lady A, I know what you mean.  My only complaint is that there was a point there it seemed a bit too detailed and overlong but otherwise the book was so intriguing.

re: The Host

Really glad you enjoyed it, Debi!  I agree, here or there she could have cut a little bit...great book overall, though.

I've lent my copy to a friend and she said last week she read the first chapter...I'm curious to hear back from her and see if she's finished yet.
