Set in the beautiful, wild countryside of Exmoor in sixteenth-century England, The House of Allerbrook depicts sixty years in the lives of the Sweetwater family, particularly Jane Sweetwater, who from an introspective teenager gradually becomes a strong, outspoken woman, fiercely loyal to her family. Against the background of the constant shifts in monarchical power and religious doctrine that was England in the 1500s, the story follows Jane and her family—some stubborn, some cruel, some naïve, but all human—as they struggle to live peacefully in a country torn by political and religious quarrels, where the rules are constantly changing.
