Back Cover:
'Only two years of having to play the sweet, simpering angel, and you get the jackpot. Not bad, Lily, Not bad at all...'
Lily knew Dane Norfolk despised her, as a schemer who'd married his brother Daniel for his money, and – Dane claimed – had an affair with Mark, Daniel's best friend, right under Daniel's nose. Nothing was further from the truth, but nothing would drag it out of Lily, either. Then Daniel's tragic death brought her face-to-face with the dark, tormenting attraction that she and Dane had shared and – up until now – denied...
Favourite Scene: (I love that he felt this way about her)
His mouth clenched as a dark, burning well of anger surged up inside him—a mark of his hatred for everything she stood for and a confusing, utterly contemptuous desire to be the only one in her life she could turn to for help and comfort. Hence the crazy swing of his emotions that had him cutting into her one moment and being prepared to do anything for her the next.
Another Fav Scene: (I love that he asked "how could you?" in this way)
'Why did you marry him, Lily?' he murmured huskily. 'How could you go ahead and marry him when you knew from the very beginning what was happening between me and you?'
Her fingers quivered. 'I loved Daniel, Dane,' she stated quietly. And she did, she insisted silently to herself. In her own way, she did.
'But you wanted me.'
Yet Another Fav Scene: (I loved that he felt compelled to make her chose, that he wanted her so seriously)
'Just tell me one thing,' he burst out suddenly. 'If it was a straight choice now, between me and Radley, who would you choose?'
My Review:
Wowza, intensely passionate story. Lily married Daniel, but it was just a marriage for show. Lily was really attracted to Dane, her brother in law, but because of Daniel's secret, she felt she had to marry him and pretend it was a real marriage. Dane hated that she married his brother, he wanted her for himself and he tried to convince Daniel that Lily was a gold-digger, he tried to show his brother that Lily was really attracted to him, but none of his attempts kept Lily and Daniel apart, it baffled and infuriated him. Daniel dies suddenly, and Lily relies on Dane for support, they are tempted to fall into bed now that she's free of her marriage, but the secrets behind her marriage keep them apart, then the idea of what's "proper" keeps them from jumping into a public affair so soon after Daniel's death.
Incredibly passionate story, the emotions leapt off the page, I loved how intense the hero was and how intently focused he was on the heroine. Slightly dated by age, but incredibly satisfying a read!
Rating: 4/5 stars, passionate ride, love Michelle Reid loads.
