When Tobie first started seeing Mark she hadn’t a clue that his half-brother was the man she’d been in love with three years before. Robert had rejected her, and when he was in an auto accident he refused to see her. Those were tough times for Tobie, for she’d been pregnant and the end of their affair had caused her to miscarry. It’s been three years, and Tobie does honestly care for Mark, even though she’s never told him about her past relationship with Robert. Invited to Emerald Cay in the Bahamas, Robert’s reclusive home, Tobie wonders how Robert will react to her. Only on the trip to the island, Mark informs Tobie that in the auto accident Robert was left crippled in a wheelchair and could not remember six months of his life prior to the accident. The shocking news upsets Tobie, and when Robert clearly doesn’t recognize her, she realizes that she wants more than anything for him to remember.

There are a few nice little twists and turns to this story. Tobie may have thought she had gotten over Robert but she’d only been fooling herself. Robert is bitter over his injuries, though he’s able to walk somewhat; he keeps this hidden from his mother and Mark. The evil mother has designs on Robert’s wealth and encourages Robert’s life of isolation. Ms. Mather magically weaves this compelling love story. The misunderstandings of the past complicate the present and threaten their future. Their’s is a hard won HEA.
