The Italian's Demand by Sara Wood ~ Harlequin Presents #2354 ~ October 2003

For 14 months, Vittore had been searching for his infant son stolen from him by his wife.  Learning his wife has died in England a few months before, he travels there in hopes of finding Lio, fearing the child has been placed in a home.  Verity Fox had believed her sister when she told her that Vittore was dead and that he'd been a womanizer.  Named as Lio's quardian, she steps into her role as Lio's mother, and finds that the little boy has been traumatized.  He hangs on to every move she makes, suffering panic attacks should she move away from him or strangers approach. Vittore is most anxious to return to Italy with his son but sees that the boy would never cope without Verity.  His solution is to take them both to his home on the Amalfi coast.

Right from the first pages we are given great insights into Vittore and his deep love for his son and the anguish he's felt this past year without him.  Verity has been told horrible lies about her brother-in-law and vows to protect the child at all costs.   Vittore and Verity have an intense chemistry which is greatly heightened by the stressful situation they find themselves regarding the boy.  You can't help but feel Vittore's pain when his son fears him, and you feel Verity's heart break when she realizes the boy will be better off with his devoted father and there will be no place in his life for her.  This is an emotional story that will pull at your heartstrings.
