Kiss of Darkness by Heather Graham
Kiss of Darkness
First, let me say that I love Heather Graham's paranormal novels. However, this one wasn't my favorite. I liked the overall story and I wanted to finish to find out what was going on. But I was very confused for the first half of the book. Not the type of confused where you read to find out the answer at the end. I think something should have been given away in the first half, unless I missed that there was a prior book connected to this one. Maggie, a secondary character, seemed to have much more of a story, which makes me think that there was a book prior to this one, though I couldn't find anything that said that.
Jessica is a psychologist who also has a bed and breakfast and designs clothes on the side. But throughout the first half of the book, it would seem like there were times she believed in vampires and times she didn't. I just couldn't understand if she did or not and it drove me nuts. It made more sense in the end but I could help but feel I was missing something.
Overall, I did enjoy the story and the characters. I like Jessica and Bryan, even though I was confused a lot. And even though the middle of the book was a little "typical" for me. Plus, there were quite a few missing words and punctuation that drove me nuts.
Not one of my favorites by this author, but I still like it okay. And as I love most of her books, this one won't ruin her work for me. :)
Blurb from back cover: The woods have always been full of whispers in Transylvania, of terrors that go back centuries to the legendary Vlad Dracul himself. Ignoring their professor's grave warning—beware those who would prey upon the innocent—several visiting students travel into the forest…and disappear. Now their professor, Bryan McAllister, believes that a dark cult is at work—and that their next gathering will happen in America.
When psychologist Jessica Fraser is approached by Bryan for her assistance, she is hesitant. Something about Bryan unnerves Jessica deeply, yet she cannot ignore the incredible pull she feels toward him. Now, as reluctant allies, they unite to seek the truth. The search takes them from the forested mountains to dimly lit clubs in New Orleans' French Quarter, where perversion goes beyond sexual to life-threatening.
And everywhere, whispering on the wind, is the dreaded word…vampyr.
