Lawman by Diana Palmer (HQN 2007)

book coverFrom the back of the book:

When San Antonio FBI agent Garon Grier buys a ranch in Jacobsville, Texas, the strong silent loner is hoping to mend some broken family fences. He's not looking for love. Grace Carver grew up in this quiet Texas town, but because of her troubled youth, she's never married - hadn't even thought about it...until Garon.

These unlikely allies are brought together by the most difficult case of Garon's career: hunting an escaped child predator whose former victims are all dead. All except one.

Now a desperate lawman and the woman who is the lone survivor of a madman's twisted rampage have one chance to put the past to rest...

My Take: Grace leads a quiet life taking care of her crotchety old grandmother who has a serious heart condition. Her new neighbour, Garon, reluctantly helps her out when her car dies and again when her grandmother is rushed to the emergency room. His bossy housekeeper, Jane Turner and Grace's grandmother's doctor, Jeb Coltrain, seem awfully protective of Grace. She's an innocent and skittish with men but when her grandmother dies, Garon feels an obligation to the young woman to help her out and he discovers he actually likes her company, but he doesn't want her to start getting any ideas...

A missing ten-year-old girl is found dead and even more disturbing is that her murder is strikingly similar to another girl's. They were both abducted from their bedroom, raped, stabbed and strangled with a red silk ribbon... As the investigation continues, it appears as if the culprit is a serial murderer.

As Grace and Garon grow closer, she can't help but shink in fear from him whenever they accidentally touch. Garon doesn't understand why she fears him and Grace is left wishing she were a normal woman who could attract a man like Grier. But she is keeping a secret. Something from her past that is never discussed. Her grandmother would not permit it. But Grace may be the only one who holds the key to catching the madman who is still out there hunting his next prey...
