Lover's Bite by Maggie Shayne

Back Cover Copy: Before she joined Reaper in hunting Gregor's gang of rogue bloodsuckers, privileged princess Topaz was gunning for just one vamp: Jack Heart. The gorgeous con man had charmed his way into her bed, her heart and her bank account, taking her for half a million dollars and vanishing without a word.

Now she and Jack—maddeningly attractive as ever—are supposedly on the same side. As Reaper's ragtag outfit scatters, Topaz sets out to solve a mystery that's plagued her all her lives, mortal and immortal: what really happened to her movie-star mother, who died when Topaz was just a baby? With four men claiming to be her father, why has she always been alone? And what stake does Jack have in discovering the truth about her past? Topaz is sure he's up to something—but her suspicions are at war with her desires.…

I read this book in fits and starts over a couple of weeks which may not have been the best idea. It was easy enough to read but finding time to do so has been a trial, to say the least. I think the choppy reading may have influenced my connection with this book and it's characters because I gotta say, I didn't enjoy it as much as previous novels in this series. Granted, I didn't love Demon's Kiss as much, either, though I did like Lover's Bite a bit better. The tone of the series has changed drastically almost to the point where the two most recent additions feel entirely separate from the previous novels. Whether that was the author's intent or not, I'm not sure. *shrugs*

It was an enjoyable read, though. Just not what I expected or was looking for. I never really connected with Jack or Topaz to the point where I didn't really care whether or not they reached a HEA. I guess I liked them well enough, I just never got that emotional attachment to them that is so important to me when reading a novel. Again, though, that could have been related more to my disconnected reading pattern with this novel than anything to do with the actual characters.

I am hoping that the next book in the series is Briar's and Reaper's story. I think there is a lot of potential there for an explosive story.

All in all I'd recommend Lover's Bite. If I weren't so attached to the original series, I probably wouldn't keep it, though.
