Magickeepers (Eternal Hourglass Book 1) by Erica Kirov (who writes as Erica Orloff for HQN)
Magickeepers: The Eternal Hourglass Book 1
Book for ages 9 and up by Erica Kirov (who writes for HQN as Erica Orloff -- I did put both names in the "author" field so that this review will come up when people click on "erica orloff" in other reviews). Excellent read, as always, from Erica. My kids were asking about the 2nd one (due out next spring) before we were even half-way through this first one. The kids also questioned the bad guy's need for more power (not Erica's writing of it, but why he wants it) and after I said, "The End" they talked about the love between the characters. Which are the kinds of discussions I like having with my kids -- what's right, what's wrong, love is important, forgiveness is important . . . The back cover tease and the brief summary on the copyright page:
The one and only Harry Houdini was killed for it, the most powerful magicians have battled for centuries to retrieve it, and even the Ancient Pharoahs feared its power. What would you do for an hourglass that stopped time? -- Living in Las Vegas with his unsuccessful father, Nick Rostov learns on his 13th birthday that he is descended from a powerful line of Russian Magickeepers on his dead mother's side, and that the equally powerful but evil Shadowkeepers will stop at nothing to get an ancient relic that his grandfather gave him.
That summary doesn't mention Nick's girl cousin Isabella, but this story has some strong girls and women, too, if you're looking for that.

I have heard a lot of good
I have heard a lot of good things about this book.

So FF, go buy it! My kids won't part with their copy
or I'd send it your way. Actually, even if my kids parted with their copy, Sadhbh's might keep it and it would never get to you! And I don't think that I could part with our copy, either. So there you go . . . you have to buy your own!
It's one of those kids books that adults can enjoy. Sometimes, my kids totally get into a book and I can't remember a thing about it when we're done. But the really good kids' books keep me as entertained and/or enthralled as the kids. This is one of those.
