The Masqueraders

You could really call Georgette Heyer among those who started the the genre of romance novels in the early part of the 20th century.  There have been reissues of her novels over the years, although they can still be difficult to come across.  The one thing I can say is that you can always find pleasure in them.  You can never predict what will happen, as can hapen so often in so many novels.

The novel is set after a failed attempt to put 'Bonnie Prince Charlie' on the throne.  A father, who has always been a bit of a rogue, pulled his children into the effort.  Now that his family is wanted, he makes his son dress like a woman and his daughter dress like a man; he subsequently sends them to England to the home of a family friend.  Unfortunately, his daughter in the guise of a man befriends a man with whom he falls in love.  The same essentially holds true for his son.  Throughout all of this, they haven't a clue where their father is.  They essentially just know that he has a scheme up his sleeve and don't know how it will affect them.

I loved this book.

Georgette Heyer is an excellent and fun author to read.
