I really enjoyed this book, but don't know how to describe it b/c there is so much going on underneath the events in the plot. Smithy Ide is an overweight (maybe obese) 43 y.o. who drinks and smokes too much and who has no friends. It's 1990, and after his parents are killed in a car accident, he just starts riding his bike and ends up riding from their home in Rhode Island to Los Angeles, telling us about what happens on the trip and what happened earlier in his life. He has a sister who has schizophrenia (sp?) but they haven't seen her in almost 20 years. When I went to audible to click on the number of stars I wanted to give it, I saw the initial blurb and clicked around to see what it meant. Ron McLarty, the author and reader, is an actor and audio book reader (has 70+ books as reader available at audible). If what I read is correct, he wrote this book, recorded it himself, gave a copy to Stephen King and a librarian, the audio version took off from there and THEN he got the print book sold. Smithy is an interesting character. Not a romance, but there is a kind of HEA at the end. Worth picking up. Availble for Audible.com and ?Penguin?. Read by the author (who does a good job). NFM
