No Good Girls

I happened to pick out this book on a trip to one of my favorite places, the library. I was browsing for a book with a fun cover, meaning colorful and sassy. I found that in Jean Pierson’s No Good Girls which had a myriad of colors: a dominant pink, purple, and green among others. However, the book was not as easy going as the animated cover implied as it captures the uncertainty one encounters when dealing with the future. It was a familiar story of four women who are trying to make their way in the world, and find someone to love who would love them equally. Their friendship is the foundation of the novel, though romance is another important factor. One of my favorite aspects of the book was how well Pierson was able to make the future seem foggy. Many novels have a clear leading female, and a clear leading male. Usually after the first one or two chapters, I know who will fall in love by the end. However, Pierson manages to reflect, through the use of various men within the work, the uncertainty of who Mr. Right is in a society where there are a variety of options when it comes to choosing one’s life mate. Moreover, I loved the way that Pierson reflected Geri’s (the main character) feelings toward her mother and other relationships where those we believe should love us unconditionally, cannot seem to manage the task. I am an avid reader. Of the hundreds of romance novels I have read, I can count on one hand the number of times a book has made me cry. Pierson manages to reach into my heart and tug at its strings, so that I could not read for several moments at different moments in the novel because of my blurry vision. I understood Geri’s desire for those she could not help loving to love her just as deeply. This novel is beautiful. A great read; I simply could not put it down. Pierson manages to entertain the audience while unveiling feelings and thoughts that we are often unaware of. If you are looking for a funny, witty, romantic and enlightening read, I can assure you No Good Girls will not disappoint.
