The Nurse’s Little Miracle by Molly Evans, M&B Med Rom-M1478 03.08
What a poignant, sweet, sad heart-tugging story. This author has the ability to pull a reader right into the depths of pain and love that Vicki is feeling. The underlying emotion throughout the majority of the story is longing and loss. Overall this is a well executed story, the only disconcerting thing was the timing of the residency program at the very end—but that is a minor issue. This is a pregnancy loss story and the poignant factor is high. Thumbs up.
Vicki and Sam are at the demise of their marriage when the story unfolds. They have been thrown together for the summer, in a place that evokes memories of happier times. There is so much pain between them. They have lost their way, but is their bond totally broken, or can factors occur during their one last summer bring them back together?
Let me just say that I think it is wrong that USA authors of medicals don’t always have their books in the USA/NA market. They are being denied the pleasure of seeing their books on their local bookstore shelves. And we, the reader, are being denied an opportunity to support our ‘local’ authors. I don’t want to see a loss of the awesome UK/Aussie authors of medicals—I would just like to see all six books published in the medical imprint per month offered in the US/NA market.

TBTB
Great review Nancy - I have this one on my teetering TBR pile.
Writing to TPTB as Nancy has suggested is a great idea. Thanks for posting the addy, Nancy. But I'd just like to assure everyone again that whilst some readers here might have just discovered this line, it's been around for decades. It's not like some of the other more recent ill-fated lines like Next or Bombshell (still amazes me they pulled that one!!!) that were only around for a few years. Whilst it may never find a permamnent home on NA shelves and NA readers may have to continue to buy online, its well entrenched in UK/Aus markets and there'd probably be a riot in France as this is our hughest market by far - we sell 3-4 times the amount of books in France than we do anywhere else!!
So just keep buying and enjoying us - we'll be here like old friends.

Amy--I really don't think
Amy--I really don't think there has been a push to launch medicals in the US. Yes, I remember hearing about them about five years ago, but nothing was done to make it easy for a reader to get them. If you don't come on the website or do the subscriptions you don't hear about them in the US.

I don't think it is fair
I don't think it is fair either. Is this book one of those not available in the US? Isn't she a US author? That is disgraceful. OK, I love the UKL and Australian writers too and do not want to give any of them up either but still I am tired of this. I wish marketing would use our blogs to listen. I have already left comments most of the times about this when I call CS. That and also not shoving subscriptions to the end of the month.

Merri, she is a US author. I really believe that the Toronto office needs to pay attention to readers and I believe they should give medicals a big push--it's nuts they don't support NA authors, but...
I don't want to miss out on the UK/Aussie authors either.

Thank you, Nancy, for speaking up regarding the availability of Med Rom for NA market. I am quite disappointed that not all 6 books are available & none of them are available in Kindle format.

Poor marketing
No Nancy, I agree - there's never been a big push
I just didn't want anyone to think we were in imminent danger of being pulled.
And yes, the poor NA authors are the ones who really miss out - apart from all our lovely readers, of course!

The couple of people in
The couple of people in publishing I've contacted about this seem to indicate in their responses that it is somehow the readers fault. But I see it a Catch-22 of--poor marketing, therefore readers don't buy, so what is the point of marketing, because the readers aren't buying--that is what so annoys me.

I am fed up with marketing
I am fed up with marketing blaming readers. Last year the answer to poor marketing for the EL line was to tell us all to blog books. Same thing with the Bombshells. I just always wonder about marketing. I mean there was this huge probably expensive ad for EL in RT after they decided to cancel the line as separate. Yes, I know ads are reserved way in advance. I am not stupid. I am too far behind to go on about this issue in regards to marketing as whole but maybe marketing should do the job they are paid to do instead of trying to shove it off on us readers. I think marketing shoots themselves in the foot with their attitude and practices sometimes. Maybe the worsening economy will send a needed shock wave and wake someone up.
We got take out tonight because we are pressed for time. Yesterday they forgot plastic silverware so I had to eat veggies in the car with my hands. Tonight, they forgot to include the main meal in the bag so my husband had to go back and we had to reheat all the other ingredients once he got home. Somehow it seems ok in today's world to ignore the customer.

Marketing....
I tend to agree with Merri. It's the job of marketing to, well, market the books! It almost feels like the job of marketing is being shoved off on the readers and then readers are blamed for the marketing not working. I have to admit, I get a little leery of getting attached to Harlequin lines since I, ahem, actually own every single Silhouette Shadow released in brand new bought in the store at the time of the release, own every Silhouette Bombshell and ditto on the condition, and was a fan of the Everlasting Love line (I came in late on those). Oh, and I read the Lunas and own most of those, which have been slowly diminishing.... need I keep going????

We were having a discussion
We were having a discussion about marketing and customer service at work this am. Coming home and finding these comments was interesting.
I think businesses have become so big they have a disconnect from the consumer.
Whatever happened to the 'customer is always right sentiment?'

I think a lot of companies
I think a lot of companies just figure customers have no choice and will just keep on taking it. The bigger companies grow, the less they seem to bother, it seems to me. There are rare pockets I have found where a few companies truly listen and think about the customer and listen instead of trying to shove customers into their marketing plans. Those are companies with whom I as a customer form long term commercial relationships. Maybe the worsening economy will shake up that attitude across the board because the problem seems widespread in almost every aspect of my commercial life.

I'm late to the medical reads
I didn't realize they existed. I have seen lines I enjoyed die off too . Love and Laughter, Duets, Silhouette Romance. I didn't get into Flipside but it came and went very quickly as well. I too started to like Everlasting about the time they cancelled it as a single line. Recently in a Goodwill I picked up a couple of books from Prescription Romance-another line that must have come and gone without any awareness on my part. There seems to be shrinking shelf syndrome in a lot of stores for books in general. We have a growing population that doesn't read perhaps? That's why I loved the idea that my reading gives a book to someone to read. It doesn't make sense that a full line of books in not available in the North American market which should have the largest readership base.

That's the part that really bugs me, aggressively market and they could easily increase their readership and profit. But instead I received a response that "they have been around for years, why haven't you heard of them before." I wanted to respond "because I just crawled out from under a rock."
